Hello my fellow flickr friends! I have been growing my portfolio and am interested in buying a domain. Is there anyone in the group that could share how they went about purchasing a site and putting it together? Are there sites with formats for photographers?

Any help would be great :) Thanks so much!

You can check domain availability at www.register.com. You can purchase domains when you sign up for hosting. Aplus.net has been good to me.

Regarding a site, BluDomain is very popular. The templates are affordable and look easy to use (not a user myself). However the rub is that your site looks like 90% of photographer's sites (minus the photos, of course!).

Good luck.

Don't have one. But if I ever feel the need to set up one, it won't be Flash-based.

For the money I think BluDomain sites kick ass.

There are a ton of sites that sell templates and you can get your own domain. Livebooks is well regarded in the community of photogs.

DreamHost is the web hosting i use.. i also use it to back up all of my photos so i can access them from anywhere in the world. You get:

500gb storage - increases by 2gb each week
5tb bandwidth - increases by 40gb each week

for $5.95 a month

basically unlimited webspace, subdomains, domains, emails, databases etc etc.

I just switched from livebooks to bluedomain. Flash is fine. Photos, sites are tagged and everyone has it. Back in 1997, it was an issue.

I register all my domain names through GoDaddy.com. It's cheaper than register.com and I've been really happy with the service there.

I designed my site myself (with the help of another designer friend), and I host my site with www.bluehost.com (not affiliated with Bludomain). I love bluehost.com and would recommend them to anyone.

As far as templates go, there are quite a few places who offer them. And several are geared towards photographers specifically. I think the market is becoming a little saturated with Blu sites, but I doubt clients will notice. You might ask around to see if you can find someone to design a simple, custom site for you for what you would spend on a Blu site.

I registered my own domain and built my own website.
I like the control that it gives me, being able to change absolutely everything whenever I want. It's currently template based and controlled by CSS.
I now have a selection of photographers who work for me and upload their work alongside mine too.
The site gets between 5000 and 86000 hits per day!

Currently expanding the site to include a lens and peripherals shop.

My host is 1&1 and they provide an extremly reliable service with great customer support if needed.
My website can be found at www.kasstzam.com

I use HostMonster for my websites, and I am very pleased with them. There are cheaper hosts out there, but you will give up customer service or uptime.

Currently, they offer 300 gigs with 3000 gigs of bandwidth - with unlimited domains and sql databases... pretty damn hard to beat. Plus - get this - you actually can reach technical support very easily. I know - I've had to call them for assistance with the various different websites I have up.

You can also install photo websites like Gallery with one click. Pretty cool.

I've been with several hosts, with a less than desirable experience - but I am very satisfied these guys.

Edit: Almost forgot... it's also $5.95 a month, and with a 12 or 24 month commitment, they pickup the tab for your domain name.
