The aim of the game is to draw people into commenting on your pictures in a more amusing or informative way than the usual dross and without running the risk of having their head bitten off for attempting to do so.


HOW TO PLAY

Quickstart
- sign up in the Blood Oath thread.
- tag other members' photos YBP, as many as you like.
- comment and then vote on at least 10 other pictures in the Pool.
- put ONE picture at a time in the pool.
- commenting ends at Popolo7, Unpopolo7 or Don'tGiveAPopolo7.
- If no votes are cast in a two week period on a particular pool submission, then all vote counts are upped by one.

The Fine Print

1. When you are ready to play, you must first add this comment: You've been Popolo'ed, or tag YBP to other members pictures. You must tag at least one YBP per photo you put into the Pool, but go ahead, do as many as you wish. You can select any photo/s from any part of another member's photostream. Tag photos whose vibe you like for some reason, for any reason, they don't have to be technically brillant, they just need to appeal to you. In fact, spread these around liberally. Look in photostreams you have never seen before, go beyond people's homepages, discover Flickr's rich mine of greatness. There's a bookmarklet you can use, but go ahead and tag or comment, whichever is easier. Here's another place to get your Firefox bookmarklets.

2. When your photo has been commented You've been Popolo'ed or tagged YBP by another group member, you may add it to the Pool. Leave a comment 'tagged by theusernamewhotaggedyou' in your own photostream. Do NOT add a photo to the pool that hasn't been tagged first.


3. You MUST comment on TEN other photos for every one you have in the pool.


4. Only ONE photo per member in the pool at any time.


5. Commenting can be about all or any aspects of the photo that move you. Some people care more about technical aspects, but the most blurred or wonky photos can also be the most engaging, so technics are not deciders in this group. If you want or don't want technical comments, please say so in your own comment stream.


6. If you appreciate, admire, connect with a photo, say why in your comment and add
-voted "popolo" (by the Popolo Photography Group).

If it's really not your thing, or you can't stand it, say why and comment -Voted "unpopolo" (by the Popolo Photography Group).

If you are completely indifferent, just comment -voted "don'tgiveapopolo" (by the Popolo Photography Group). In this case you don't have to say why.

Be honest, but please don't get personal. Who are you anyway, Joan Rivers? If you want vicious, one of the DM groups might suit you better.

It is perfectly acceptable to comment and vote on your own photo. Everyone has photos in their own stream that they like, or that they don't like, or that they really don't care about. Be honest. After all, you didn't choose it for the Pool, someone else did. Go ahead, critique your own picture.

7. Tag with: popolo or unpopolo or dontgiveapopolo.

Each vote MUST be accompanied by a valid comment and tag. Comments without tags or tags without comments will not be counted.


8. Bookmarklets for the commenting and tagging are available here. Thanks very much to ubergeek Judson for making them. There is a thread for questions about the bookmarklets, so if you're not sure how to install them, just post a query and one of us will help you. Unless you use IE, in which case please install Firefox.


9. Pictures with 7 popolo votes will be eligible for Pop Fabulous. Pictures with 7 unpopolo tags and comments will go to a far more interesting place, in some opinions Unpop Fabulous, for that enticing-sounding concept called posterity.

However, if you get 7 dontgiveapopolos on one of your photos, quite an achievement really, your photo will get automatically removed without comment. Some people care, it seems. Takes all sorts, eh? ;)

Please wait for an admin to tag and remove your Popolo7 or Unpopolo7 photograph, then you can request entry to one of these prestigious and lovely destination Pools where they will live forever in all their beauteous glory.


10. Photographs only, please. Even if they get YBP'd, screen captures, scans of flyers or newspaper articles, close-ups of works of art or the television, graphic designs, drawings from a graphics tablet etc will be removed.


11. Photos must have been taken by you.
There was an appeal to add the rider, 'or OF you'. Basically, we don't mind the occasional portrait of you by someone else, a maximum of say, one every couple of months, but please don't make a habit of it. If your stream is full of images of you by your dad, this might not be the right place for him to get feedback anyway.

12. Don't post your picture in more than ONE voting pool at a time.
Wait until voting has completely finished in Popolo before submitting your picture to 100 Best, or whatever. Otherwise things get too confusing.

If you don't understand any of this palaver, or something isn't clear, open a thread. In fact please go ahead and open a thread at any time about anything you like.


IMPORTANT GROUP CULTURE STUFF

1. The Blood Oath

All members must swear a blood oath not to respond to boring fucktard behaviour in kind. That's the thing isn't it? You can take almost anything from someone provided you like and respect them and believe there's no malice involved.

2. It's just a game on the internet. If you don't like what someone has said about one of your pictures, just say bollocks to this nonsense and go outside and take some more pictures. Especially if it's raining.

3. The Admins will oversee all breaches of etiquette and internecine squabbles.

4. Blocking is sometimes an issue in these voting groups, but to be honest, we don't care about your personal disputes with other members. If someone is blocking you so that you are unable to comment on their picture, simply move on to the next one. If a member is blocking an undue number of others, so that it's difficult for the game to proceed, we're pretty sure the Troll Finder General will have something to say about it, and no mistake.

5. Have fun! If you've been invited to join this group it's because somebody loves your pictures and maybe they even love you. Enjoy that feeling, it's warm and cuddly and precious and fuzzy and beautiful.

6. The doors will close at 256 members. After that, people may leave, or maybe kicked with or without comment and new people will be admitted only when there are spaces.

7. We are a collection of oddballs and have quite a few oddball friends. If your photo has been commented on by a small plastic cow, a hamster or a world statesman, just go with the flow. You might learn something.
