EOS 300D/350D Remote control

some days ago i saw a workguide in a newspaper, yesterday i built it and today i want to share my knowledge with you!

what you need:

- a little case (1.50€)
- 2 button (0.50€)
- 1 switch (0.50€)
- stereo plug 2.5 mm (1.00€)
- cable (0.50€)

now use this connection diagram and bring all the stuff together!

...if you did it here are the funktions:

- press the focus button to focus the picture
- press the shoot button to take a picture
- to use the longtime button use the "m camera menu" and set the catch time to "bulp" now press the shoot button to open the lens and press the longtime button to close it

all eos 300D and 350D users have fun and if there is a problem...ask!

IIRC, the "rebel" series of cameras have one type of jack that's easy to find and all of the "non-rebel" cameras has a different jack that only Canon makes. Goes all of the way back to the pre-EOS T series canons.

i also made my own electronic cable release for my 350D, last December. actually i made 2. these were based on diagrams readily available from the Net:

spyderman.ekodapo.sk/?s=t&p=10

(his site has other hacks)

if you're adept at using a soldering iron, and you have an unused/old/junk stopwatch, you can fit all the necessary "circuitry" IN the stopwatch. i used the existing contacts/buttons as the focus and shutter release, and added a 3.5mm jack so that i'm not limited to a specific lenth of cable.

you can also use a film canister :) i use this for bulb exposures only.

will post pics as soon as i'm able (upload limit exceeded)

if you are into making it wireless, I have a bit of experience with that:

(caution, set is very large - I haven't trimmed it down much, yet)

here's a photo of the circuit and some annotations:

some DPR chatter:

and here's one of the dpreview articles I wrote about it:

if you are interested in RF wireless camera control, you can search on my username on that dpr forum and you'll find lots of tech stuff that I write about.. ;)

I've just completed building a remote from these instructions and it works a treat.

I don't pick up a soldering iron above twice a year, and this a was fine project for my (lack of) skill level.

For the Mk2 I'm going to try to pick up an old film camera from a charity shop and cannibalise it for the combined focus/shutter button. A friend picked up a suitable one (Pentax Zoom105super) for £1.00 a couple of weeks back, but he wanted it intact.

I just finished a remote following the instructions pointed out by wolf359.

I did not follow your diagram GPunkt as the bulb switch seems to be connected in the wrong way. As I understand it from the diverse documentations found on the net and experimentations, the shutter will open/close when you connect all the rings of the jack, so the switch should do that, no?

You can buy a wireless remote specifically for the 350D too, but without arranging reflectors of some kind, it (and I imagine the universal one too) will only work when it can see the sensor - on the front. If you want to stand behind the camera anywhere, you'll need to go for the wired versions.

Well, it depends on the length of you cable, but you can extend it with standard headphones extensions if you.

I have used it with a 5m+2.5m extensions and it works great.

I've made a very similar shutter release for my 300D based on this information:
www.devilgas.com/photo/350d_remote/350d_remote.asp
Mine has a momentary pushbutton for the shutter and also toggle switches for both prefocus (to maintain a certain focus.exposure level) and shutter (for long bulb exposures - star trails).
In reply to Mortimer, the diagram is correct - you only need to connect the outer and inner rings to focus and trip the shutter.

Since most of the time I just use the shutter button I'll probably make a much simpler/lighter/cheaper cable that is simply one normally-open pushbutton on a 2 wire cable connected to the outer & inner rings of the 2.5mm plug. Just 3 components - plug, cable & button.

I would just be happy if I could make an extention cord for my 20Ds wired remote. There is no way I am paying $70 to $100 for a stinkin' cable.

Looks like the 20D remote doesn't have the audio jack connector as this one, do you have an idea what connector this is?

kcinfocus  Pro User  says:

I did a little Googling and found this site.

www.interprophoto.com/index.htm

That say they have the 20D remote extention cord for $9.80!
Model number C581931 ET-1000N3 Extention Cord. That is almost too good to be true, even with a $20 shipping fee for regular mail. That is $45 less than most, and $80 less than direct from Canon.

The sticky bit is that every where else on the internet the manufacturer's number is Mfr# 2440A001. Now this site is in Canada, but they say the prices are all USD.

I have never heard of this place, and am scared stiff to send them my credit card information. I really want this cord, and I will not pay $75 for it.

Have any of you had experiences with this company, good or bad?

@ kcinfocus: this is 3 months too late if you have already tried to buy from Inter-Pro Photo (and I hope you haven't) because they went out of business. I live in Vancouver, and had never heard of them, which says something about not haveing a long-lasting (i.e. trustworthy) reputation.

Hope you had better luck somewhere else.
