Welcome Polar-Artists and visitors. This group has been operating since September 28, 2008.

NOTE: This group is not for mini-planets, but for their inverse … details below.

About Polar-Displaced-Panoramas

This group is NOT for Mini-Planets.

• What's the difference between a mini-planet and a Polar-Displaced-Panorama?

>> Mini-Planets: The center of the circle shows the ground (or floor if an interior); the outside of the circle (or circumference) shows the sky (or ceiling)

>> Polar-Displaced-Panoramas: The center shows the sky (or ceiling); the outside (or circumference) shows the ground (or floor)

• So what's the similarity between a mini-planet and a Polar-Displaced-Panorama?

Both are created from an equirectangular image. Once you have that, which is usually about 90% of the work, all one needs to do is flip the equirectangular image vertically (in PS), before running polar coordinates. Finish by adding some enhancement, shading, and placing it in the center of the bottom cube surface.

• What is a Polar-Displaced-Panorama?

A Polar-Displaced-Panorama can be considered the inverse of a mini-planet. If you create mini-planets from an equirectangular image, then you have everything you need to create a Polar-Displaced-Panorama.

These images are created by those who have mastered a skill of shooting multiple, overlapping still images, covering an area of 360-degrees square (360x360). These multiple images are then stitched together in post-production, creating one final equirectangular composite image, covering a full 360° horizontally and vertically.

In comparison to creating a mini-planet, the opposite or inverse illusion of a virtually reflective, shiny globe, sphere or ball is produced, placed on the floor or ground (which would be showing), reflecting 360-degrees of the environment above.

• What it is Not …

This group is not for picture-taking of physically-existing, reflective elements found in the real world (there are groups for those) or for mini-planets (there are groups for those, too … and I'm a member of some).

• The Group's Ultimate Mission

Quality is the primary focus, not quantity. Stitching should be seamless and virtually flawless. Exposure, clarity, detail and the illusion of realism will determine success. This group is intended to display gallery-quality artwork. Flickr is loaded with snapshots and nice photographs — producing Polar-Displaced-Panoramas requires creativity as well as analytical skill.

• As this Groups Evolves …

The PDSB Group will definitely change as needed, and through maturity — or it will simply die-on-the vine if there's little interest. Since I could not find a group focused on this, I decided to start one (my first and only group), even though I have little time as it is now. We'll see how it goes.

Again, this is all about quality. Those images which don't immediately pass my eye, will probably be placed in a post, requiring at least three existing members to approve it for the pool.

Suggestion are welcomed and encouraged.

Example of a Polar-Displaced-Panorama ... the floor or ground is on the ouside; the sky or ceiling is in the center. The floor or ground should be visible. Adding shading the the "ball" gives it the curvature.

Below: Here a Polar-Displaced-Panorama is resting on a Mini-Planet. Both in one image, each created from the same equirectangular composite.
