About Plott Hounds

A place for those with a special appreciation for the Plott Hound... and "anything Plott!"

The Plott is a beautiful, fearless, devoted dog, whether in the field or in the home among its beloved human family. It's a high-energy dog with a distinctive BAWL though, so not recommended for apartment dwellers! If you don't have a large fenced-in area or the time to take this dog on regular LONG walks, please don't think of getting one! They may implode otherwise, or at the very least develop an assortment of issues out of frustration.

Please feel welcomed to join and add your photos and videos! This is dedicated to the purebred Plott, but photos of Plott-mixes are welcomed too. And PLEASE be encouraged to comment on others' photos!

We're pleased and honored to have in our group a descendant of the very Plotts who developed this breed. John Plott shares this information with us: "I'm related to Johannes Plott (from what I understand it used to be Platz, another source of debate), and in 1750 he stepped off of a ship named Priscilla that was docked in Philadephia. Originally from Heidelberg Germany, he was only 16 years old when he boarded a ship out of Holland to America. He had a brother that died on the trip over but he brought his faithful hunting dogs, the Plott Hounds (which is a source of disagreement between Plott breeders; some say they were shipped later, others say he brought them over directly). They worked their way down toward North Carolina. In time, Johannes married Margaret and settled in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Johannes and Margaret had nine children. Two hundred fifty years later, the Plott Balsam, Plott Farm and even the Plott Hound can be associated with my wonderful family name."
