About Pittsburghology

Pittsburgh. noun. A North American city located in the South West of the state of Pennsylvania.
-ology. affix. The Study of a subject or discipline.
Pittsburghology. obsession. the study of the culture, environment, and people of one of the best damn cities in the United States.
Think of this place as something like an encyclopedia or picture dictionary. We're not just looking for pretty pictures of and from Pittsburgh, but we're looking for those shots which sum up the Pittsburgh experience. Things you find that are representative of life in Pittsburgh whether they be the minutiae of day to day life, the historical sites, or big Pittsburgh events. Anything goes as long as it relates to Pittsburgh.
That being said there are rules, oh there are always rules.

THE GOLDEN RULES
1) Just in case it's not patently obvious, the photo submitted must be related to Pittsburgh or the Greater Pittsburgh Area/Allegheny County in some way. Just to keep it clear.

2)Yeah pictures do speak thousands upon thousands of words, but you know what else speaks a thousand words? A thousand words. While we're not looking for an essay to accompany the picture, it is the utmost major REQUIREMENT of the group that at least a one paragraph (3-5 sentences) explanation accompany the picture. This is a minimum requirement. There is no maximum length.
The explanation should focus on the cultural aspect of the photo, rather than personal information like when the photo was taken and how you know someone who lived there.
To sum up, photos submitted to the group MUST have a 3-5 sentence description accompanying it.

3) Have Fun! While serious academic explanations and descriptions of the history of the Roberto Clemente Bridge are welcome, so are humorous commentaries. Be Silly, Be Crude, Be Offensive. There's good points and bad points about every city. Listen to the Talking Heads' song Cities for some clues.

6) Repeats and overlaps all welcome. Different takes, views and opinions on the same subject are of great value to a group like this, even if it's by the same person. No problem with 200 pictures of the Cathedral of Learning all saying how many windows it has and how tall it is, quanity will just reflect how much a part of Pittsburgh (at least in the eyes of this flickr community) that subject is.
