I thought it might be fun to start a thread where everyone can choose one of their photos and give a before/after type display, explaining what they did to achieve their 'after' photo.

Here's one I did yesterday. I was going for the vintage postcard look.

BEFORE:

Driving towards Mt Ngauruhoe

AFTER:

Mt Ngauruhoe [postcard version]

I'm working from memory, so let's hope I remember it all. :)

1. Autofix on the image to fix levels.
2. Rotated slightly to fix crooked horizon.
3. "Cinematic effect" to change to landscape and change colour a bit.
4. Cropped out the black bars top/bottom.
5. "Holga effect" to add grain. Used the fade slider to keep most of the colour.
6. Text tool to add title
7. Frame tool with dark grey outer frame and white inner frame.
8. Save and upload to Flickr.

I find that I use picnik quite a bit to do multiple steps like this... but I rarely write them down, so I have a hard time duplicating things when I want to get the same effect... I'm a "fiddle with the knobs"-type person, I guess. :)

That's great! Of course Picnik keeps track of all the steps so you can undo them. Would it be helpful if it would list them for you in some way?

Rhonda_Marie  Pro User  says:

yes Darrin, it totally would!

I meant to comment on this thread earlier. Thanks for bringing a little life into the group Brenda!

I wanted to play, but I can never remember which steps I used, as most of my edits are random picks and a lot of luck.

I <3 picnik though.

Oh, totally helpful. If only so I can duplicate my results on another shot.

And couldn't the text tool at the picnik be used for a sort of non-batch watermark for those without PS, picture-shark, or similar -- see Bright-hat Brenda's "AFTER" above ^.
And thanks Brenda for listing your procedures.

Thanks. And yes, it could work as a watermarking tool. You'll find a 'copyright symbol' in the 'shapes' area as well. With the ability to change the opacity of the text as well, it seems a great solution.

Yes, I see picnik Text can be font, size, colour, and Fade adjusted to suit.
Pity it's taking time to load images across ---- especially for multiple photos ----- but once there, procedures are clear and fast.

Hi guys.. just joined this group because last night I discovered picnik and fell in love with it.. it's absolutely amazing! To me anyway, who has never had or even seen really photoshop before... this is just so exciting!
I played around with the free options. This is what I got..

This is my photo that I edited myself in my basic program, with contrast and colour balance and such.
Before I discovered picnik...

And this is what I did in picnik..
threesixtyfive | day ninetytwo

I added a blue vignette, added text, added a shape and then faded the shape, added a border and then curved the edges.

It's so simple and amazing and fun!

Hope I am allowed to post here.. if not just tell me and I shall delete it..

For any Picnik creations of mine and the originals that I uploaded before making the creations, do I have to include the originals in the pool as well, or only the Picnik creations?

I only post my Picnik creations but you are welcome to post both. (post them together so we can see the before/after in a row in the pool)

Hi Moonwolf - here's a mod of the Debbie photo. I turned up the Contrast under Exposure, the Temperature under Colors. Last added a thin layer of Soften and a very light Vignette from the Create:Effects.

Hey Charlie,
I like it. It gives it a more dramatic look while still retaining the age.
Thank you.

Hey moonwolf, personally I like the original best. The edited one you did seems a bit too cool-toned for my liking, and the other one seems a bit too blurry now.. just personal opinion. :)

I've been a member of Picnik since it's inception and throughout it's BETA Phase. I purchased a subscription when it went live. I think it is one of the Internet's best web sites. Certainly the best online photo editor.

Nothing fancy about this example, a picture taken by my daughter turned into something worth keeping.
