I'm just about to start trying to retroscpectively keyboard my image collection (before it really outgrows me!).
I'm thinking of the following categories for keywords:
- type of photo (eg landscape, macro, portrait, etc)
- location (eg country, region, city, locale)
- event (birthday, wedding, festival, etc)
- people (family, friends, strangers, etc)
- source (DSLR, conpact, scanned film, etc)
- content (whatever applied to the photo eg lion, clouds, green, blur, etc)
Have I missed something?
Is this too much work?
What's your system?

That's VERY similar to my system. I have "shot type", "location", "event" and "content". It *is* a lot of work but I've found the results very useful.

Places
Events
People
Things
Colours
Verbs (running, cycling...)
Date
PhotoWalkthrough (assignments)
Japanese (for Japanese tags I've created)
Religion (mostly related to Japanese or Indian temples)
I was thinking of creating just three grammar categories to really simplify things - Verbs, nouns and adjectives. I think you could categorise nearly everything with those, but I'm unsure how well it would work in reality.

Taz,
At least you've still got your hair. I forgot to back mine up a few years ago so I've lost most of it and what's left has degraded badly to a grey colour!

@ kasugai_sean........About 3 or 4 months ago my hard drive crashed.
It had everything going back about....3 years.
It's been to a recovery guy but after a couple of tries and him being ill.
Nothing looks saveable......Photo's are there, but kind of scambled.
For some reason, he still thinks he can get them back.........I'm not holding my breath!!
@ BigPhil.......I don't think I could have cloned you any balder.:-)))
After my hard drive crash.....I've been pulling my hair out, waiting!!

Phil you might want to consider Taz's remedy for hair-pulling - seen recently on a photostream near you...

Things not readily available in EXIF are handy too:
Filter used (Polarizer. ND4, ND8, etc)
Tripod
Monopod
Reflector
Altitude
Compass heading
Makes reference for future return trips or reference settings used that much better and that much more accurate.
