Rescheduled: moonlight photowalk

Looking dicey

I'll follow through and show up in case newcomers arrive, but the cloud cover is looking pretty tough for photography.

Reminder: bring a flashlight/headlamp.

Updated Jan 29 7:30 am: Rescheduling for Feb 27 due to predicted cloudy conditions.

Friday is a full moon, and if the weather cooperates, I will organize a photowalk up Millcreek Canyon that evening.

My plan is to meet at a parking lot on the west side of Wasatch Drive between 3300 S and 3800 S at 7:30 pm to car pool up to the gate where the road is closed. We should be ready to depart the gate area by around 8:00 pm.

Snowshoes or cross-country skis are both used in the canyon, but some people get by with just sturdy winter shoes. Warm clothes, layers, all the usual winter gear is advisable. I blogged once about gearing up: www.anntorrence.com/blog/2008/12/winter-weather-photograp...

Moonrise is at 5:24pm, by 8:00 it should be well over the mountains.

Leave a comment if you think you might attend.

Ann, what do you think? Supposed to be hazy Friday. Will that stop this? Trying to make plans to be able to come.

rescheduling this due to forecast:

Today: Widespread haze after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 39. Southeast wind at 6 mph becoming northwest.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. West northwest wind at 6 mph becoming south southeast.

probably will cloud over later, but not worth dragging folks out to walk in the dark. Next full moon is February 27, will try again then.

Tonight's full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon.

This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. Each month brings another full moon name.

But why will this moon be bigger than others? Here's how the moon works:

The moon is, on average, 238,855 miles (384,400 km) from Earth. The moon's orbit around Earth – which causes it to go through all its phases once every 29.5 days – is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. One side of the orbit is 31,070 miles (50,000 km) closer than the other.

So in each orbit, the moon reaches this closest point to us, called perigee. Once or twice a year, perigee coincides with a full moon, as it will tonight, making the moon bigger and brighter than any other full moons during the year.

Tonight it will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full Moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com.

KSL says the storm will split, NWS says it will precip tomorrow afternoon. I will show up at the parking lot at 7:15 and folks can make the call as they see fit. Group photo at the gate where the road up MIllcreek is closed. BUT there will be a parking issue--we won't be the only folks on the trail if the conditions are good, so do try to carpool.

I've never been up Millcreek. Is there a gate admission fee?
Also I know dogs are allowed up there on certain days/times. Would they be allowed up there for this? How do I find out?

Dogs allowed, on odd days must be leashed. Lots of folks will be working with tripods, if you bring your dog, please be careful to keep it from entangling with other folks' gear.

$3-4 to leave the canyon.
