July Photowalk: Freedom Festival Balloon Fest (Save the Date)

Hot Air Balloon

Since I was so enthusiastically passed the baton for the next event, I figured I better jump on announcing it as the date is next week.

The Provo Freedom Festival is the all week celebrating the 4th of July (I hope most here know this) and part of the event is a huge balloon launch that takes place on three mornings, July 3, 4, 5. All three mornings are great for photos with plenty of balloons and photo opportunities. There are tons of balloons launched all at once, making for a flurry of photo ops. If you arrive early though, there is plenty to capture during the preparation of the balloons.

Save the Date - July 4th, 6:30 am
Based on initial feedback, I will just pick a date/time and hope it works for everyone. Come on July 4th and make it a photowalk where family is welcome to come along and enjoy the event. You may have to brave a little traffic on the way out, but it is well worth the festivities. To make sure you can leave right after the balloon launch, you will want to park a little further away (3-4 blocks) and walk in to the actual launch field.

The site encourages arriving by 6:30 am to be a part of the filling of the balloons, and I recommend it for scoping out your angles for when the launch takes place. Balloon operators last year were very accommodating and even inviting to me and other photographers, which was a lot of fun.

Chime in if you can join us on the 4th and enjoy a fun early morning Photowalk.

@scotto: If you still want to shoot some balloons, they have hot air balloons in Driggs on the 4th (and probably a few days before). It's only a short drive from Jackson.

Scott, if it's any consolation, I'm guessing Jackson Hole is going to be much cooler.

I'm in.

On the 4th there will also be competition for parking with the parade which starts just 2 blocks east on University Ave. So make sure you don't park where you might get blocked in by others, or you'll be there for a while.

After the balloons launch they clear the field back to a wide circle so that the balloons can come back for a competition of popping balloons and dropping beanbags on an X in the middle. I'd suggest going to the south end of the circle as the balloons almost always come in from the north (due to wind out of provo canyon). You get the best view of them coming in over the buildings and also in front of Timpanogos mountain.

My family usually bring chairs and blankets and we set them out right at the edge of the circle before they start inflating to make sure we have a spot when everyone starts going back out.

This sounds great and we will most likely be in Provo for the parade already.

Maybe this is a dumb question but I've never been on a Photowalk. It sounds fun and obviously involves pictures. I've heard all about them on other forums. Any guidelines or preparations for my first one?

I'm out, unfortunately. The kids and I will be in San Fran about that time, braving the teeming hordes. If we're lucky it won't be too foggy to see the fireworks!

I went for the first time last year ... it was pretty cool and the family had a great time. Here's a sample of pictures from last year's event:

Not sure if we'll make it again this year, but if we do I'll probably be with the family rather than the group.

Welcome!

Any guidelines or preparations for my first one?

After the obvious camera, charged batteries and empty memory cards.

Other than that, it's sort of dependent on your own style and the particular location. Hydration is important, particularly this time of the year. Tripods and/or flash can be useful, depending on your own shooting style. Polarizer filters can be good for outside daytime events involving sky, metal or water. Graduated ND filters perhaps for evening stuff. Sometimes people intentionally leave things behind that they'd normally bring to force them out of their comfort zones and try different things.

Contacted the insurance company. They reminded me of the $500 deductable. Oh well.

I found a used 550 for $330 plus shipping. Or a brand new 580 EXII for just $60 more with free shipping. I bought the 580 EXII. The RadioPopper receiver was another $180 on top of that. So I guess I've passed the $500 deductable ... but not by enough for me to call them back.

I'm off to go pick up a replacement cell phone right now. Have you heard of "The Wing"? Kinda like the blackberry but running Windows Mobile 6. Anyway, that's what I think I'll pick up. Back in a little bit.

Count me in; July 4th at 6:30am. I'll probably be dragging my favorite model and my dad with me, so I may not be able to hang with the group all that long (my favorite model is my active 7-year old son). I'm also trying to talk a friend and my grandfather into joining us.

Some directions for those unfamiliar with the area:

As for parking, think strategic. I am not aware of any "secret" good locations, but if you do want to take off after the launch and avoid being locked in to the parade route/traffic, I suggest parking several blocks north and/or west and walking in.

I went this morning and it was great as usual. Less balloons this year then normal (had 17 usually have 25+) so hopefully more will show up tomorrow.

Sadly the wind only brought one back to the main field, but last year one day we had 2 or 3, the next day we had like 10. So anything can happen tomorrow.

According to my pictures the first balloon launched at 6:34 today. It may be a bit delayed tomorrow because they do a flag ceremony, but you may want to be a bit earlier then 6:30 to see all the inflating. Again according to my pictures the other balloons started inflating at 6:22.

As you can see inflating to launch only takes about 10-15 minutes so don't be late =)

First time photowalker! I am so there. I really wanted to be the Great Salt Lake walk but missed the date! Do I look for the group in a particular location so I can get pointers or is this a "every man/woman for themselves" event? Or, do I just look for a group of people with items hanging from their necks? See ya bright and early.

There will be hundreds of people there with cameras, so this is the one time we won't stick out like a sore thumb. Once we scatter, there will be no identifying us from the rest of the crowd.

That being said, are we meeting at a specific location to say hi before we scatter and are never seen again?

Looks like I'll be there with my wife and two of my kids. I don't know that I'll make any attempt to "hook up" with the group... with so many people there, I'm not sure how feasible that will be. Still, I'll keep an eye out for a fellow Photo Walker. Hope to see some of you there.

I have a way there and hopefully can find some of you (since I'm not in Utah anymore, this may be my only chance for a while)...I'll be the short guy with a camera and a shirt with a tree on it (I usually don't choose my clothes the night before but I'll make an exception this time :)
