Sorry for the delay, more details are forthcoming...I am organising the next photowalk and would like to lead a walking tour of City Creek Park, Memory Grove Park and the Utah State Capitol building on Saturday, 24 May.

I am relatively new to the area and have not visited either park but have visited the capitol building and think it will make for a fantastic location for a spring photowalk. I am flexible with and open to suggestions regarding the start time and the order in which we visit these locations.

I know that the security staff at the capitol welcome photography but I will still contact them in advance to let them know that X-many photographers will be descending upon them. Does anyone have experience with photography in either of the parks near the capitol?

Please reply with a show of "hands" if you can attend this walk and feel free to share ideas or ask further questions, thanks!

It'd be nice to be in Memory Grove/City Creek Park during the evening light. We might hit the interior of the State Capitol first before the light is optimal and then wander down as the sun gets lower. Although the evening light probably deepens earlier down in the canyon than in the rest of the valley.

There's a lot of potential in the park. Here's a couple shots I took last March soon after getting back into photography: www.flickr.com/photos/hpebley3/tags/memorialgrove/

Diane and I are planning on being there.

Hey, I am totally onboard with hpebley3... If we can do this in the early to late afternoon, that would give us the best light for memory grove although I might add that the light will fade from memory grove first and if we migrate up to the capitol, there could be some amazing sunset light on the capitol.

calanan  Pro User  says:

I just returned from scoping out all three locations, I dare say this is going to be a great opportunity for photos as the views are excellent. The three locations are well within walking distance of each other and there is 2 hour parking available on streets all around this area. In fact I saw some areas along the east side of Canyon Drive just before Memory Grove that exempted the 2 hour limit on weekends and holidays.

I do like the idea of shooting bottom-up, walking from City Creek to Memory Grove then up the stairs to the Capitol to leave room for sun to illuminate the interior of the rotunda as well as to place us up on the hill at sunset. We'll need to determine sunset on the 24th then work back to give us enough time at each location.

I also spoke with a representative (lowercase r not uppercase R) of the Capitol about us showing up and she welcomes us but with the following caveats:

+ Keep in mind that it is Memorial Day Weekend and the Capitol may be quite busy
+ No flash photography in the Gold Room and unfortunately the chambers will be closed
+ Be mindful of the other visitors (they have had cases of other photogs bullying visitors out of their shots)

She also asked me to contact her closer to the day with a headcount so that she can pass that along to security so they know to expect us. Please continue to respond in this thread if you intend on joining us.

Other than those reservations she welcomes us to Utah's people's house and hopes we enjoy our visit!

Thanks,

- mike

Would it be better if I moved this photowalk from the Sat of Memorial Day weekend to either the 17th or the 31st?

I don't mean to confuse existing plans people may have made for the 24th but I'm thinking it might be better to avoid that weekend for both the crowds and to maximise attendance (allowing those of you taking vacations to attend).

What are your thoughts on this?

As for the time, sunset is 8:45pm that night, would 5 PM give you all enough time to see City Creek, Memory Grove and the Capitol before sunset?

An unfortunate change of plans

I just called the Capitol Preservation Board to give them our final headcount and was told that unfortunately the interior of the building will be closed all day tomorrow due to an unforeseen electrical/alarm system issue and testing is needed. We are still welcome to access the grounds but we will not be able to enter the Capitol itself.

Personally my inclination is to hold on this event as the interior of the Capitol truly is the highlight of walk. But that said would the populous like to carry on with the walk and just forgo visiting the interior or would you like to try this again next week?

I say let's go for it!

I always thought doing all three was a bit ambitious. There's enough material in the area for three trips. And if we do the Capitol later, it doesn't have to be next week.

Weather says scattered T-Showers with 30% chance of rain. Translated, that typically means bright and clear. If we do have t-showers in the area, might be a good opportunity to climb the hill behind the capitol and get some good lightning shots across the valley.
