March Event (Update: Confirmed!), Photowalk UTA TRAX

view profile

Update: We have received permission from UTA. We will be meeting at the Trax station located adjacent to the Moran Eye Center (65 Medical Drive, SLC) at 4:00 pm. We will then head West toward the Gateway getting off at each stop to photograph. It will take us a couple of hours to make the trek.

(from my post on www.leggnet.com/2008/03/photowalking-utah-trax.html)

The monthly Photowalking Utah events have become quite popular. Last month's event at the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center attracted over 50 photographers. Thanks to everyone who supported the outing.

This month's event is scheduled for Saturday March 29th at 4:00 pm. The plan is to have the group meet at the TRAX station located at the University of Utah. We will then ride West toward the Gateway, getting off at each stop to photograph then catching the next train.

We have applied (update: Received!) with UTA for the necessary permissions to bring 50+ photographers onto their trains. We did this to minimize the "FREAK OUT" factor that the railroad cops might have when we showed up photographing everything in site.

I am posting this now so everyone can mark their calendar. .

As they say in show biz, "Stay tuned for details..."

Sounds like a great event. I have it on my calendar in hopes we get the necessary permission.

With about 15 minutes in between trains, this should be a fun experiment in speed photography. I'm penciled in...

Rich,

Just FYI, there is a RSL soccer game that starts at Rice Eccles at 4pm that same day. It is the season opener and likely to be well attended. TRAX is usually pretty crowded bringing people to the game. Maybe the plan for the photowalk is that the trains will be empty as they leave the U. Anyway, whether or not this is a conflict depends on whether the crowds will scare people off. Didn't know if you were aware. :-)

Since we are going East to West, we should be okay. Our plan is to park around the Moran Eye Center (their garage is open and empty on Saturdays) and head out from there. I don't anticipate a problem.

There's more than one. Probably need to be more specific.

@Harley,

Rich means the TRAX station immediately across from the Moran Eye Center where we met last time. I don't think that parking in the Moran will be a problem, but I'll ensure our facilities people know about it before hand.

@ everyone else:

It would be good to have people post here to let me know how many might be expected to show up.

I have it on the calendar. This sounds so goofy that it will be a load of fun, the challenge only enhancing the fun.

Any estimate on duration? I have the evening open, but I have two small avid train riders that love to take pictures. They'll tire out before I will.

My wife is expecting a baby on the 31st. So, pencil me in as tentative.

So, I'm assuming that we will be riding "west toward the gateway", and then back? That might still intefere with the RSL game.

According to the Trax schedule, if we leave on the 16:08 train from the Medical Center station, and at each station get off and then back on on the next train, we'll arrive at the Arena station at 18:47. A couple of the stations down town are close enough, we may want to think about just walking from one to the other rather than riding.

A great idea. Harley, you're definitely the brains of this operation :)

Since when does UTA require permission to take pictures of TRAX? I've shot on the trains and around the stations and nobody's ever said word one to me.

Yeah, I agree with you on principle. However, in the interest of being neighborly, we figured that given 50 or so people with cameras out shooting might make some.... nervous. For whatever reason, cameras are not always welcome and more than one of us have been hassled in the past by security/police wanting to prevent photography from occurring. Therefore, prior permissions in cases like these are generally appropriate and being able to cite someone's name or a contact person when approached can prevent the show from being shut down by the overzealous.

Hello all... I am impatiently waiting to find out the details on the Trax photowalk. This would be my first. If the Trax plan does not pan out I hope another walk can be planned for this month. Sorry for sounding like one of my kids... "are we there yet"... But I am excited to go on my first walk.

Thanks to all who put fourth their efforts for these AWSOME outings

I asked the UTA person assigned to handle our request for a timeframe on the approval process. BTW, the issue seems not to be the photography itself. UTA has ordinances regulating any group activity use of their facilities.

Yes, "ordinances" was the word they used. And let us remember that as a quasi-governmental agency, they have their own police force. We play this one straight up, lest we sully the fine reputation of our little group. I will post an update as soon as I hear from UTA.

I am a full time police officer and a part time photographer... the issue of getting into "trouble" should not be a concern. We would be leagally using the Trax services. As to not wanting to "ruffle their Feathers" and being respectful, I understand. Just FYI.

If this does not pan out, is there a possibility of going to another location on the 29th ????

Absolutely. If this doesn't happen, we will find an alternative location to shoot. So keep the date open on the ol' calendar :)

There are a number of possibilities available for short term notice. Perhaps out UTA contact will get back to us tomorrow (Monday). I'll be back in the country with more consistent Internet access tomorrow evening, so I'll try and follow up then.

I am really looking forward to this photowalk, I love the idea. I am hoping the time doesn't cause any problems though. Besides the REAL soccer game, there is an LDS Womans conference at temple square at 6:00 pm. TRAX might be pretty crowded.
