Manipulating channels from various colour spaces (LAB springs to mind) to make masks is far more powerful and accurate, and not too much more work than magic wanding... ;-)

Yep you are rather shooting yourself in the foot saying you prefer this or that exotic tool. Simple is often best, and every situation is different. The Magic Wand's recent sibling, the Quick Select tool is awesome for instance. I use it in conjunction with the original Quick mask tool all the time, and I suspect Quick Mask would be way too uncool for some Photoshop wanabes.

As always, Gwennie is the Master. His tutorials are the best there is, but not always easy to find.
