Photoshop Challenge #2
(I appologize for the delay. Life has this way of getting in the way of fun!)

Good morning Ladies and Gents! Netizens and Flickerzens. This is the second installment of the so far well attended Photoshop Challenge. Thanks go to DRP for this idea, hopefully he's able to at least observe the proceedings. Let your mind be your guide, go places you want to go in your wildest dreams, places you wish to avoid or need to leave behind.

Use any photo tool that enables you to complete the challenge within the rules.

There aren't very many material rules here. So maybe I'll say this is Free Jazz. Here are the rules:

Rules:
1) The full set of images is tagged I've tagged all the candidate images with pschallenge02raw

2) There are three categories of picture in this challenge. Scene, Foreground and texture, tagged by pschallenge02Sc , pschallenge02Fg , pschallenge02Tx .

3) Your challenge is to take a scene image and add elements from photos in the other two categories to create a single image scene with a mood that is distinct from the mood of the existing photos.

4) You can utilize any method to combine photos, but you must use at least one elements from each of the three categories for your image. (You don't even have to use the entire scene image if you don't want to, just use other elements from the other photos instead.)

5) Explain your steps and method. We're out for a good time!

6) Please link to this thread the and photos you used for the composite in the description.

7) All your creations should be tagged with psChallenge#2 and titled "Photoshop Challenge #2." Reply to this thread with your best effort inserting the image into your post with the IMG tag off the result's small or Medium size image page. Feel free to add links to your any alternate creations in your main reply.

8) This challenge will extend to Monday April 11 at the least. Discuss among yourselves whether more time is neccessary.

Below are only examples of the three categories, the last two are textures I've chosen from Leo L30's excellent collection of textures, that he's generously contributed to the challenge.

Foreground: Crowing for the Bellagio

Texture: Ground

Scene: Once and Future King

Leo L30 Texture1:

Leo L30 Texture2:

Hi
Sorry but I don't understand this part of the rules -

7) " Reply to this thread with your best effort inserting the image into your post with the IMG tag off the result's small or Medium size image page. Feel free to add links to your any alternate creations in your main reply.

Could you explain what is meant by the above! particularly about how to insert an image?

BenODen says:

Howdy, Harry, thanks for dropping by.

Sure. When you're done with the image, you upload it here of course. Then you click on "Different Sizes" under the "additional information" section of the full page photo display. That brings you to the medium sized image. This really is a bit big for the thread, so click on the tab at the top labeled small. At the bottom of the page, there's html to create a picture <a> tag that you copy and paste into the reply. That makes images that you can click on, like in my rules.

Hope that helps,

-Bennett

P.S. Please don't be offended if that was too detailed... Other people may have that question, so may as well be absolutely clear.

By the time I finished this I was seriously into a 5 liter box of Peter Vella Sunset Blush wine so the exact methodology escapes me. The guitar? When you mix Photoshop with a certain quantity of cheap vino there are no stinkin' rules.
The Golden Guitar Guy: Hue and Saturation > Colorize > adjusted to a golden hue, very saturated.
Bricks: Duped layer > Transform > Flip horizontal (and then flipped vertical on other duped layers) to create a whole lotta bricks. Then, layer mask > gradated dark to light > Blending mode: Color Burn.
Train Tracks: Deleted everything except the tracks > duped layer > Flipped horizontal > duped layer a few more times and flipped horizontal.
Full Image: Applied Little Ink Pot Chalkaholic plugin, and also BuzzSimplifier plugin.
I do not advocate drinking and Photoshopping for creativity, but it doesn't hurt (until the next day!)

Yeah, fun stuff!

So some rule bending going on, I have to decide the penalty. DRP decided it was photwenie for a day, but I'll come up with something else creative. You just wait! Haha!

The texture is behind the tear in the picture!!!
Forgot to mention:-
I copied the rails layer and used the glowing edges filter and then the overlay blend mode.
I sharpened the original layer 150% 2 pixels.
Selected the rails and used Auto FX dreamsuite to emboss and colour (not as effective as it could have been) overlayed those also
used similar method for the railwayman
I wanted a sort of poster/cartoon effect!

The split was done with the Vizros plugin *** they are now giving away this plugin and a few more - well worth having!!*** (you can thank me later)

RoboCock vs. MechaniCareBear

My New-Found Calling, And My Entry Into The Photoshop Challenge #2

1. Duplicated the background layer of the railroad tracks "scene" image (7623253) and changed the mode to Hard Light to deepen the color and shadow areas, then merged the layers into one.

2. Imported the cactus leaf (5487761) "texture image", applied Transform/Perspective to get the angle right, and placed it over the brown grassy field to give it some interest. Changed it's blending mode to Linear Burn (70%) and added a layer mask to "erase" sections where it bled over into the buildings in the background.

3. Imported both the rooster (7622801) and machinery (7623917) "foreground" images, silhouetted and scaled them down, and executed the same procedure as in Step 1.

4. Used a layer mask on the rooster and massaged it into the machinery below to form a half rooster-half machine creature I call "RoboCock."

5. Imported sections of the vending machine balls (7624044) "texture" image, silhouetted and scaled them down. I duplicated a few of the balls, rotating and placing them in different areas of the image.

6. Created a layer above the others and painted a bluish-black color in various areas (rooster, machine part, next to the balls) with different feathered brushes to create realistic shadows given the angle of the sun in the background image. Changed it's blending mode to Multiply (75%), and added a layer mask, cleaning up spill-over.

7. Imported the threads (5175221) "texture" image, applied Transform/Scale to bring it up just in the area of the sky, changed it's Hue/Saturation to blue, and used the Gaussian blur filter to soften it. Added a layer mask to clean up spill-over into the field and rooster.

8. Created a layer, picked a nice purple, and used the gradient tool to add color to the sky. Changed the mode to Hard Light (30%).

9. Imported the Care Bear (7622607) "foreground" image, silhouetted it, and applied Transform/Scale. Placed it on the horizon and dropped the layer opacity down to 60%.

10. Created a layer and added a little punch to the rooster's eye with a sharp blue using a hard brush, changing the blending mode to Vivid Color.

11. Done.

So, why did the RoboCock cross the tracks?

To regenerate his fuel core with egg-shaped power cells lying in the cacto-scape, before they were stolen by the giant MechaniCareBear looming on the horizon.

Of course!

Photoshop Challenge #2

1. Started with Scene #1, the cityscape.
2. Added Crowing for the Bellagio and isolated the rooster using a layer mask.
3. Brought in Elmo to plug a hole in the clouds.
4. Pasted the copper wire texture into a levels layer mask then ran a filter on the mask to get some texture for the overall picture.
5. Duplicated and resized some roosters because I liked the shape.
6. Added the heart from the Care bear.
7. Experimented with a variety of blending modes and filters.
8. Merged the layers and worked on the merged image with the clone stamp, paint layers and a burn and dodge layer.

Photoshop Challenge #2

Method (or an approximation thereof):
1. Abused curves on the scene layer until I got a colour I liked.
2. This made the foreground black so I brought in the texture with a hard light blend mode.
3. Much tweaking of brightness/contrast and a colour fill adjustment layer in colour burn mode to boost the colour on the rooster.
4. Another copy of the texture layer in screen mode, masked to create the light on the ground around the rooster.

I would certainly encourage people to edit posts and go down to small image at least. (blue pencil edit button) I would hate to encourage thumbnail as it's really a small image, but as we get more responses, maybe it's best... I can hardly bear to take the examples (1/3 the total) below small, myself, but at 13K a piece, 20 images should be loadable in.. Gaaah, a minute. Ok, thumbnails if you're feeling generous, and at least small images please, I guess..

Also, let's standardize tags. I originally requested pschallenge#2 to match DRP's pattern for his challenge, so can I have those with the pschallenge2 tags change to pschallenge#2? Thanks.

(If you just want to do a quick edit of the html and you have a standard sized image, put _t (thumbnail) or _m (small) in the IMG src="blah.jpg" part, and change the size to wide side, 75 narrow, 50 if it's a standard JPG. 240 x 180 for small. )

I fiddled with it a lot, but I remember meddling with layer qualities, overlay, free transform, paintbrush for the sepia look, color burn on the edges, contrast and brightness... you get the idea. No clue, in other words :)

Also did a secondary one, care bear apocalypse... or something along those lines:

Photoshop Challenge #2

Here are 2 versions, color & duotone.

Background created by blending 2 “scenes” together.

Brick texture wrapped to the subject using displacement map, heighten brick “depth” with PS lighting filter and bump map.

Lens flare added with PS supplied filter.

Layer masks utilize tone selections, gradient masks and soft brush. There is a lot of contrast masking, selective contrast adjustment, layer blending modes, cloning and patch tool stuff.

Final touch – add grain to pull the image together and selective USM to sharpen.

Photoshop Challenge #2

Cut around foreground #5 and added it as a separate layer to Scene #1
Flipped foreground #5 horizontally and increased the contrast and brightness
Added "cutout" filters to both layers.
Cut one of the keys out of Texture #7 added it as three separate layers
Rotated each layer.
Merged the three layers and added shadows and highlights.
Added "wind" filter to the merged layer.
Selected part of the colour of foreground #5 and inverted.

that's what i did:
- took the scenery-photo, played with levels and changed it to b&w
- took the rooster, used the cutout filter and changed the colors
- took the tree-texture and added it to the house on the left, giving it a bit of structure
- finally changed the sky from white to yellow

hope you like it...

Ok, I've murdered another photo with Photoshop *grin*
This one used both backgrounds, (hey, why settle for one? *grin*)
Played around with saturation, colours. Added the texture (cactus) as a pattern layer.
Added the railway track.
Added neon glow, played around with the colours some more.
Added the rooster. Duplicated the rooster and distorted to give it a shadow, desaturated.

Photoshop Challenge #2

1. Cut out the Chicken and Elmo. Tried drawing on the chicken's missing feet - got bored and used Jaded's Cowboy Boot FX plugin™ instead.

2. Solarised the Farm background, and added lightning using Xenofex.

3. Bent the Chicken's head down and stretched it's mouth open and used Motion Blur to create the "blast"

4. Used the Text Tool to insert some (badly translated by Google) Godzilla style copy - apologies to anyone who can read it! Added the Cactus texture to the main title.

5. Abused Elmo in the worst way possible...
