Great! Contestants already!
@iyearwoo- Yes, the August contest is open until the fifth photo is posted.. then the contest is closed until the next month.
@extereme - the best way to post is to use the "<img src=" code to post then the image will show inline and people won't have to click on a link to the the images. I took the liberty of changing your link to display inline.

I'll start off the feedback comments...
Michael's (extreme wide angle) image has a presentation disadvantage by being half the height and width as the other images. I think this image would be more effective it the WB was shifted so the interior lights were not so yellow.
jyearwoo's image is well done but I find that the large driveway expanse distracts from the strength of the image.
Phil's (pwscott61) image really grabs my attention. This is somewhat due to the architecture of the house but also, because of the crisp white trim and the in contrast to the bright blue sky and increased saturation.
Tyra's (tlpatcheco) image is well composed and exposed and the saturation appears to be bumped up a bit but the ordinariness of the house and the trees get in the way of making this a strong image.
greggmi_99's image is an impressive layout and nicely illustrates it's proximity to the golf coarse but it feels a little low contrast and low saturation. Also a stronger sky could add to this image.
Feel free to jump in here and help me out.

[deleted] says:
"...you have to be quick on the draw to get in this contest! "
Larry, and all, although I never watch any of those manufactured-rubbish idol shows, I do offer this (hopefully) constructive criticism...
This entry process has one basic - but serious - flaw.
Timezones.
Assuming the contest is posted up at a similar time every time, then it will favor the same group of people over and over. Conversely, the same people will be disadvantaged every time.
Rather than first five in, the window of opportunity to submit an entry should be broader so that everybody has the same opportunity, and not be disadvantaged with being asleep, or during business hours (in theory, out on shoots), etc.
What is the contest REALLY about... being a race to be one of the first to submit an entry, or to encourage quality photography?
Unless I have missed something, do you see the dillema here?
BTW, it's July, not August.
Wouldn't the August contest start Aug 1 and conclude end of August, with the winner announced in the first few days of the following month?

my vote for this round (is that how this works?) goes to pwscott61, with tlpacheco & jyearwoo in a close tie for second...
if I had to give an explanation for why not the other two... extreme's shot is just too dark for my taste. and as for greggmi... anybody can make a mansion on a golf course look nice (no offense, it's a real nice shot)

Great idea Larry, I like it, The time thing makes it a bit hard so here is a solution!
Perhaps a round robin type comp - My photo vs Your Photo
The photo that wins goes to the next round and challenges another photographers photo!
We could call it photo death match ! Just like battle bots (for all you geeks out there)
ahhh..........I’m living a pipe dream again........1,2,3 I’m backing the room and back to reality!

Yes, the timing thing and limiting the number of contestants is clearly a problem for a world wide forum. I should have thought about that.
Also, I don't want to create a format that is labor intensive to administer. The photo fight thing would be fun but would take a lot of time to administer.
I guess this is why other flickr contests just have someone chose a winner from a bunch of photos posted to a special contest group.

I think this should be done this way:
1. Create 1 thread, named "August Contest"
2. interested users post pictures in the thread until the specified time... let's say, 1 week. Or sent to Larry and posted anonymous, by him, to avoid biased voting...
3. After submission is over, in the same thread, a voting process is held... with a 1-2-3 places. Every 1st place gets 3 points, every second 2 and every third, 1.
4. At the end, votes are counted and the winner is clear... who has more points.
This could work.
Some rules has to be in place of course, set of rules that could be refined by time.
a. one submission / user
b. registered voters (so we know the voter is legit)
Hmmm, I think I can automate Voter registration and vote counting...
let me know what do you think about this process....

I think we should all enter and then be voted off the island by the group of our peers?
There should be an 800-number to call to vote for each contestant.
The loser should be on the today show the following day.

Michael Asgian is in the process of setting up some magic code on his site that will allow everyone to submit photos for the contest to a page on his site, then he will post them all anonymously on a discussion thread here on the PFRE group and then he will have another page that will automate voting. This way each contest can take many more than five entries. I think this will fix the problems with this contest thread... He says he'll have some code put together in a few days for us to try.

OK, here's my thoughts on the Exterior shots submitted so far:
First off, I think there's no point in holding the quality of the house as a factor, since the photographer can't control that. Ditto for weather conditions. What makes a good photographer is the ability to create a quality photo of whatever is in front of him/her, under any conditions.
What we can hold them accountable for is composition, exposure, focus/sharpness, color, and toning.
And so, starting with Michael (Extreme Wide Angle):
Good composition, points for creativity (night shot). Should have backed off the yellow, which is a bit too vivid. And I think you missed the "sweet spot" in terms of light by a few minutes. It's just a tad dark and gloomy. But if this were a supplemental shot being used in a brochure, it would really be successful. As the primary Exterior shot, there isn't enough detail visible.
Justin (jyearwoo):
Hmmm.... Way too much driveway, the house is crowded up against the top of the frame. So I'm subtracting points for composition right away. It seems a little contrasty, too, although that might just be in reaction to so much bright driveway. But that's odd, for an HDR. Sky seems a bit vivid.
We can't know for sure if there weren't other houses built really close by, thus precluding a wider shot, but certainly it would be nice to have more of a "context" for this place.
Phil (pwscott61):
Classic. Maybe a tiny bit unbalanced in terms of sky/yard ratio, but that's a nit. Verticals are ever so slightly off. But the exposure seems spot on, there's a hint of the surroundings (particularly with the umbrella and fence at extreme right), and the color looks very natural. For an RE shot, it doesn't get much better.
Tyra (tlpacheco):
While I like the way you framed the house with the foliage, I keep wishing you had moved in closer; there's too much tree, not enough house here. A little too much driveway, too, although I can see the sense in showing the little turnaround. That said, it's a well-done exposure, and you handled the post pretty well, too. There's a lot of dynamic range in this one but the shadows don't seem too clipped, highlights aren't too blown, color looks good. I just think that moving in another 10 feet would have retained some foliage around the edges, made the house more of a focal point, and given the picture the "punch" it needs.
greggmi_99:
This one seems flat. What it needs most is some darkroom work; a little curves adjustment and some shadow/highlight would lighten the midtones and brighten the highlights. Right now it just really lacks depth. Part of that is the angle - straight on from this much distance really deprives us of any sense of 3-dimensionality, so the trees in the foreground distract and block us from the subject. I think in this case it might have been better to shoot at an angle of, oh, say, 30 degrees to the left, so that the perspective of the house leading away from the camera would impart some depth.
Clearly it was a good idea to include some golf course, as the specific location of this house is a big deal.
So I think my main comments are on the exposure (underexposed) and the angle (too straight-on, given the situation). Still, I do know what the house looks like, I have a good sense of the scale, and I know where it is. So the picture does it's job in the basic respects.

damn, all you guys have great shots. If I could recommend something, maybe we should each post setup details to the shot to help people evaluate the image. Afterall, sometimes even the most simple of images took a great deal of effort. Should that be weighed in the evaluations?

I would say the end result gets weighed, not how you got there. That's how the business works anyway.
I just included the setup out of habit as lots of the groups I belong to and learn from require it or they toss your images- like Strobist, Nikon CLS, etc.

My thoughts on the Kitchen Shots posted so far:
Jyearwoo
Perfect verts. Perfect camera height. Flash output is too strong. A little too much contrast.
tlpacheco
Best lighting control/exposure of the bunch. Perfect colors. I wish you'd moved that little tv (I know, I know. We're not the stagers). Also, the straight-on comp is alright, but the shot might have been stronger from an angle (from somewhere to the left). It would've shown more of the kitchen, and every buyer wants to see a big kitchen.
Extremem Wide Angle
One of the best I've seen from you. Fantastic composition. Great window pull. Very natural feel. what holds this shot back from greatness is the noise. This tells me that it probably came out of the camera too dark, and needed considerable rescuing in PS. It was rescued quite well, but the noise is a problem.
pwscott
I like your shot very much, but it feels almost like a whole-house shot. It's not very intimate. My eyes just keep getting drawn into the dining and family rooms. Great color. Great exposure. Verts need correcting (most noticable in the upper left and righthand corners).
I'm eagerly anticipating next week's batch! Keep up the good work!

Glad to see this has progressed into the second week into the kitchen competition. Great bunch of kitchen shots!
@Coastalpics- not sure what you mean by decisions. I'd like to continue this competition to the end posting shots each week and finishing with a polldaddy poll to pick the winner in the last fweek of this month. In the mean time Michael Asgian is building a page that will allow any number of anonymous contestants each month which we can tryout next month.
Thanks BGreenfield and Scott for your comments.
I think one of the greatest benefits of this kind of contest is the comparative discussion of a number of photos on the same subject by a group of people that really see details well and understand the process of creating these kind of images. Everyone can learn a huge amount by reading about what others are seeing and seeing the level of detail that everyone sees.
Great process- keep up the great work! Photographic education doesn't get much better than this.

Hello everyone. My mom is very ill and I'm going to visit her this weekend and won't be back until late Monday (it's a 1,300 mile dirve round trip). So, I hope it is OK for me to go ahead and post my Great Room shot a few days early. Looking at the competition, I don't give myself much of a chance, but you never know.
Here's my Great Room photograph:

Coastalpics - sorry this is confusing. To recap:
1-As we found when we started this thread, because this is world wide this would work better if there was several days for people to enter. That way anyone in any time zone could enter.
2-As you pointed out if contestants were anonymous people would be more likely to carry on critical discussion.
3-Doing the voting on Polldaddy limits the number of entrants and makes the voting less verifiable.
3-Michael Asgian suggested solutions for these problems and is implementing some web pages to fix these problems yet allow a thread discussion of the contestants work on a thread like this.
4-Despite the start up problems for this thread we have 5 or perhaps now 4 contestants so we are finishing this thread under the rules we started it.
Michael just posted the proposed rules for the next contest on a different thread.
We will use Michael's improved approach to start a new thread at the beginning of Aug.

Royal Flush is the hand of all hands. It beats all. I swear your images have gotten so much better (not that they weren't great before). What are you doing differently? It seems that you are shooting tighter shots and thinking more about compositions.

People keep asking me that, so I must be doing something differently. I guess it's just the evolution of things, because I haven't learned any new tricks or secrets. The lighting component has become more intuitive and takes less time to figure out, and I've been trying to think "outside the box" on composition--but I was trying to do that all along. I guess it just all fell into place. Thanks for the kudos!

Tyra, your first (exterior) shot wasn't my favorite, but I think the last three shots you posted are just great. Your interior work, and lighting in particular, is quite strong. Going Portrait on the Living Room was an interesting choice. I wish I could see more of the room. I would've went Landscape on that one. However, going Portrait on the bathroom shot definitely worked. Overall....technically and visually outstanding.
