About Photographs become art

This is a group dedicated to photographs that have been transformed in post-processing to look like paintings or drawings. The image should still be recognisable, but the effect should make the image appear more like a traditional artwork than a traditional photograph.

The treatment process is capable of producing beautiful and fascinating art, which often brings out elements in the original photograph which would otherwise have remained hidden.

Check the pool for examples. The first picture added to the pool has a description of one technique, but there are many others. It's fun to experiment!

If adding your photo to the pool, add the tag "photographs become art" (remember the quotes). There is a 5 photo per day limit for additions to the group.

If commenting on a photo, add the following to your comment (copy and paste):

This is a process which can irritate traditionalists, but then photography in its early days was seen as a lesser art form, compared to painting. Even a great poet like Charles Baudelaire felt inspired to criticise photography:

"Our squalid society has rushed, Narcissus to a man, to gloat at its trivial image on a scrap of metal."

As photography developed, it liberated art. No longer was it necessary to seek the perfect representation of the real world. Impressionism, abstract art forms, all were a sign of the new liberation that photography brought to traditional art. This group is part of that "new tradition".
