About The Photo Critique Forum

The Photo Critique Forum. Get yours at bighugelabs.com/flickr

A group for amateurs and pros alike who are serious about photography and wish to share and learn from fellow artists. Please limit pool submissions to one per day. Please try to critique at least three photos for each photo you submit, and please try to put some thought into your critiques- ie, not 'wow super duper dude!', but a critique which tries to give constructive feedback that someone might find useful or insightful. Please don't limit your critiques to only the best photos, as those generally are not the ones which need feedback for improvement. Rather, feel free to offer suggestions to improve the flawed photos posted here. Be firm, but kind, and always try to keep a helpful spirit to your critiques.

You don't have to be any kind of expert to critique well. The process is about critical thinking, and exploring what makes you like or dislike an image. It's ok to say you like or dislike something, but it's much better to try to articulate why you feel that way. Try to explore thoughts on composition, lighting, style and execution -subject matter is certainly important in the end, but an excellent photograph starts behind the camera, regardless of what's in front. Your thoughts will help others view their work from a fresh perspective, and the process of expressing your thoughts will help you evaluate your tastes and explore the process of seeing photography. It's a win-win situation!

If you're posting to the pool, please choose your submissions carefully. Pick a shot you put some thought and effort into. Having a specific question, ie 'how would you light this differently' or 'how would you crop this' can be helpful in seeking meaningful and helpful critiques. Be prepared for the critiquers to pick apart your hard work, too, as deconstruction really is the heart of critique and is a great way to learn and plan for your next shoot. Remember, critiques are the opinion of the critic, and in the end what matters is that your photography pleases you. And most of all, don't forget to return the favor by critiqueing at least three other pool submissions each time you post. It will come back to you.

Feel free to post discussions on photography related topics here, and try to be civil, helpful, and stay on topic.
