About Photocasting!

It has been brought to my attention that there is no group on Flickr to talk about photocasting issues... I'm initiating this goup without any fanfare, but hopefully it will start to aggregate a few people for the discussion of photocasting and photocasting tools.

The first order of business will be raising awareness about photocasting.

1) What is photocasting? (more below)

2) How do I enable photocasting on my Flickr account?

3) What softeare is available for photocasting aggregation? (more below)

4) And more...

1. What is photocasting

Photocating is very similar to to the much hyped podcasting except that the content being syndicated is specifically photos. Some might even refer tp photocasting ase "photo podcasting", this as opposed to "audio podcasting" or "video podcasting".

So what is podcasting? The idea is that media, in this case images, are posted online, usually via a blog, a "photo blog", or a service like Flickr. These images are then automatically referenced in a subscribable syndication feed. When this feed is subscribed to by your friends in a compatible software piece of software new photos posted by you online are automatically downloaded to their computers.

You might think of it in simple terms... like a specialized version of email. Except that it's based on a subscription only mechanism and is specifically for photos.

You can read all about podcasting at the following url.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting

3. Some photocasting tools

New to photocasting? Expect a tutorial soon. For now I'll just recommed some photocasting tools.

1) iPhoto 6.0 - my photocasting tool of choice for use with Flickr, but don\'t upgrade to 6.02... apple seems to have removed all permalinks, so you can\'t click back to the original Flickr page to comment. Also, it is mac only and costs lots of money.

2) I/ON, openvision.tv
I still haven\'t tried it out. At this writing it\'s still in beta, but I\'ve seen some very cool screenshots of its photocasting support. It\'s available for Mac OSX and Windows XP, it\'s open source, and it\'s free. Three huge marks in its favor. Expect further details on the group.

Unforetuneatly that\'s all I have for now, which is why I\'m initiating this group. We need more awarness and more conversation.

What photocasting aggregators do you use? What other sources have you found in addition to Flickr? What are your favorite feeds? Join up and let me know.

Posting Photos to this group

This group not really about posting photos, but since these are galleries I'm going to say, post your favorite photos about anything, JUST as long as your images are atleast 1024 wide or tall and you have enabled photocasting on your Flickr account.

Also, if you have a photocastin client we want to here about it. Please post you screensnaps showing photocasting software, and make sure to post a new topic about your software. We'd love to hear about it.

Some Hype about photocasting

Mark my words, photocasting has a HUGE future, it\'s as certain a thing as Flickr\'s success, because the two in fact go hand in hand.

So, join up, speak your mind, share your feed, and let\'s see if we can\'t make this a success.
