I have driven down to it and gawked. It's not easy to get good closeup shots, but it has called to me for years. I have a shot in my "Philadelphia" album taken of it in the distance as I drive down the road toward it, and I have a couple more closer up in my files that I will get to posting soon.

I think we need to figure out a way to get in. This place looks way too cool to just let be ;)

I put up a few of the close shots I have gotten on my page. They can be found in the "Philadelphia" album or the "Power Plants and Factories" album I am just starting up.

It's in Port Richmond off Delaware Ave & Lewis Street a bit south of the Betsy Ross Bridge.
An aerial view can be seen here: local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=qnxkx48r99ph&s...

you can get as close as you want, just hope that you are not seen by the on-site personnel or security.

That building and the area surrounding it is extremely appealing for photography. I finally a couple of shots from the speedline train heading to Jersey.

How tight is the security in this place? I was thinking of giving it a try..

Hey folks - this place is not Byberry.
I would be very careful and watch my back if I chose to trespass upon the grounds of an active power substation.
Please know that this location is monitored 24/7 and that if you did get in, you were very lucky!
Thanks to copper thieves and scrappers, security is getting much tighter at abandonments (especially power plants with active substations!) all over the US.
You can get some great shots from the street -but keep it to that.

Sspincycle, have you heard anything about the level of security? Like will they just kick photographers out or will there be legal hassles etc. I've heard varying stories about the strictness of security. I am still trying to go at some point but am reluctant because I can't run very fast with a camera bag and tripod on my shoulders...

i've talked my way out of many security situations. and most times i use the whole 'i'm doing a project for school, if i could just have ten minutes and i won't touch anything' story. but, according to this thread, it's pretty strict there.. i'd still be down to try to get through, though.

also, i've never SEEN security just waiting around this place. in most areas like this one, there's usually just a guy or two walking around and some cameras (that probably don't work or have been painted over). as long as you can avoid both of those things outside, you're fineee.

they call the cops... part of this plant is actually still in service, and there is almost always at least 1 person working there.
Also if you do make it inside, be extremely careful... a bunch of explorers almost got seriously hurt in the fall, when a large portion of the roof collapsed inside... the building is really starting to fall apart. it fell just a few feet away from where they were photographing.

It's realy interesting. There are a bunch of buildings that used to be Electric Company Buildings that they keep abandoning xD
In my town there is a building that says "Philadelphia Electric Co." but it's just a Hollywood Tans. They never ripped down the old letters.
But no, I do not have much information. It is quite interesting, as most abandoned things are.

There are a few generating stations along Delaware Ave. As they may not have smoke coming out of the stacks, it doesn't mean that they stopped operating. An electric company has many divisions so there could still be the Underground Transmissions Division going. Like train tracks they are all connected. Oh and it is very dangerous.
This place:

has been putting perimeter sensors all over and they also have a video surveillance system that works.

theres a book in print put out a fews years back and done in 8x10 large format film camera by a PA. photographer, i cant recall his name, last name starts with an S. the photos i saw were of the interior and are the most fastinating shots ive seen, he got permission and did the book, sorry i cant recall his name, someone dig him up...they depicted the turbines and grand interior, i grew up in bridesburg and used the walk the delaire train bridge to new jersey as a kid growing up underneath the betsy and delaire, contact me if you wanna go at night this winter sometime to shoot near the plant, one or two people only!

Don't go poking around in there. I worked there for 30 years. Although the main building is retired there is a lot of energized equipment on the grounds from 2400 volts up to 220,000 volts. Take your pictures from the street or the river.

The picture posted at the beginning is the Richmond power station not the "Philadelphia Electric Company" building next to Penn Treaty Park. Does this mean that the people commenting that it's under watch are indeed talking about the Richmond power station? Reason I ask is I've seen a great Urbex video of the interior. An Urbex group that travels around the world were inside. Anyone know of the accessibility of the Philadelphia electric company building near Penn Treaty email me.

Worked on the movie The Last Airbender there. The place is contaminated and dangerous. The ceiling is caving in,the lower floors flood, there's mercury everywhere etc.We had to wear hardhats at all times, and also stung a net across the main room to protect us from falling debris. Part of the building is still in use.Magnificent decay.Built in a time when public buildings were important and symbols of pride exemplifying social and economic progress. The opposite of' The Last Airbender'
