About Petrie Island Photography (Ottawa)

Situated less than 12km from Parliament Hill along the Ottawa River this little gem of nature in Orléans is known locally as Petrie Island, however, the correct name is the plural - Petrie Islands. With a mix of wetlands, woodlands, swamp forest, beaches and sandy shorelines comes a variety of of plants, birds, ducks, turtles and turtle breeding sites, open water vegetation and marsh habitat. In the past year, white-tailed deer have also been sighted here.

There are several trails including a shore trail, island trail and forest trail. Trails are open winter and summer. This main island is accessible by a causeway and you can can canoe or kayak (or snowshoe in the winter) to any of the surrounding smaller islands. During the winter months, once the river has frozen solid, a tiny ice fishing village appears along one of the inlets.

The beach is open for public swimming. Unfortunately you must pay to park (during the summer months). Fortunately, rates are only $2 for 5 hours.
