So now i have to choose between this and taking photos at an elite bodybuilding comp that weekend...
I am also wondering how much practical stuff i will be able to do with my Sony, seeing as how the hotshoe is a proprietary one and my camera does not have a PC synch for off camera flash control. Any ideas??

Dean, co-incidentally, one fo the models we have for the weekend is a body builer - 2 birds with one stone :-).
I am sure I have a Sony hotshoe adaptor to PC in my box of tricks, I will have a look.

It would give me a great excuse to have the weekend off work and take the wife down to Bunbury to spend some time with her family. This is exactly the sort of course i have been waiting for.
I might have a look at the Gadget Infinity website and see what they have in the way of an adapter. That and have a chat to the wife and see if she wants to do the trip.

And Stevo, if we're short of bodybuilding models, can we use you? :-)
As Broosta mentioned, if you don't have an off-camera flash, I have a couple of spare Nikon flashes if you're a Nikon user (SB26 and SB600), and I think Broosta may have one or two spare ones. If you're not a Nikon user... err... err... :-P

Seng! You are not fueling that Nikon/Canon debate again!
Shame on you (slap) - turns out my spare flashes aren't either Canon or Nikon!
And the studio lights don't give a rats what kind of camera is connected to them. (hussies)

@Broosta and Seng. Maybe Johno could pop down aswell ;-)

I have a few cheap flashes that I use on Canon, some ebay (cactus clone) remotes and slave hot shoe (for any flash or camera).
I also have a sigma EF-500 SUPER MA (Minolta, Alpha mount) flash. It has all the wireless stuff for the Sony's but I just use it for the built in slave mode.

I am Tesladownunder from Bunbury and will be hosting the photographic session regarding high voltage photography.
Yesterday for the first time I had some 20 photographers present to view and learn how to photograph high voltage and explosive effects. A sample of these is shown on tesladownunder.com/PhotoNightFeb09.htm
You won't need a flash. Only one manually triggered flash is used for all cameras for the front curtain shots. Just learn how to take long manual exposures with a prefixed focus on a tripod. Most people got good photos judged by an audible "Oooohhh" as the long exposure came up on the viewer. Everyone saw things they would never see otherwise and learnt things about the unique aspects of this type of photography.

Now would probably be a good time to elaborate on the Light Magic Workshop.
Having attended a number of photo workshops over the years, Seng, Brett and I have decided that there is a need for something totally different in workshops. Something that is more flexible and adaptable, that would give people tangible skills and ideas to bring away with them.
So, we have developed a concept for a photographic workshop that is unlike any other. Instead of sitting in a lecture hall listening to stuffed shirts ramble on, as interesting and informative as it may be, there is nothing like getting in amongst it in hands-on kind of way.
People have so many different skill levels and interests within the photographic medium, and we have adapted this workshop to reach to these different levels.
What we have done is structured this with:
4 facilitators with different areas of expertise, including landscape, fine art, glamour, technical, commercial.
2 models for the weekend, 1 male and 1 female
Full studio facilities
Digital workflow and Photoshop instruction
And a fridge ;-)
So how it works is that there will be a number of specific units that will be tailored to suit small groups of participants and will range from learning how to use your camera in manual mode right through to the technical aspects of off-camera and studio lighting and art direction. You pick which unit you’d like to participate in, and progress from there during the weekend.
This workshop will also suit the highly developed (pardon the pun) photographer, who would use this opportunity to network with other photographers and have plenty of shooting time with some great facilities and subjects.
Of course, don’t forget the fantastic evening with Peter Terren and his remarkable Tesla coil display – a must for fans of long exposure photography as the images you will make will be just amazing!
This weekend workshop is a great opportunity to learn about lighting (studio and outdoors) and art direction, to become familiar with techniques and equipment for studio lighting, to photograph two great models and to socialise with other photographers.
What are you waiting for? To register your interest, please contact Bruce Jorgensen at jorvik@wn.com.au (a $50 deposit is all it takes to secure your place at this workshop).

Thanks Bruce.
If I could just say a few words. After having attended a workshop run along these same lines by PIP earlier last year in the Southwest. I can not recommend highly enough that you all attend this event (I most definitely will).
The previous course I attended was only made available to me after a spare spot was identified very late, I was lucky. Don't leave it to late people.
Our very own PIP instructors that presented that workshop were very professional in all aspects of their presentations and their knowledge on each subject was fantastic. Two of the instructors from that workshop are doing this one. Aswell as that, anyone that went on the Freo Available Light workshop with Brett, will appreciate the wealth of knowledge that he also holds.
We also had a lot of fun and it was so great, as Bruce mentioned for "Networking". I have made some great friends from that weekend and will be forever thankful.

@ChemiKaze! - Contact Peter at Tesla Down Under directly if you want to know about *other* things he's doing. this is his web site.
A group from the Workshop Camera Club went to visit him last month and had a great deal of fun. I'm sure he can advise you of other times when you could participate. Going with the Pipsters would be fun if you could make it though :)

Okey-dokey, after realising that this workshop doesn't conflict other plans, I'm in.
For lurkers & newbies who are a bit intimidated by the idea of spending a weekend away with a group of camera geeks: don't be.
The time spent at these events is always informative & a lot of fun. So, to quote Molly Meldrum: "Do yourself a favour"

@ Mags - Sorry about the delay in answering your question. The reason for this is it has posed a small dilemna for us. Given that there is a limited amount of space for the Tesla event, and if we find that the workshop is fully subscribed, we couldn't have workshop folkls missing out in favour of people who only wanted to come for the night. If you can be patient and wait another week or so we can see if we can fit you in.
@Bob - In discussions with Peter Terren when first setting this up, his email to me said ' I do not normally do demonstrations for the public, -however having a technical audience would make it more interesting for me' and so he agreed. This is probably the reason he had people from the Wokshop Camera Club, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the show at Peter's house the other week.
I believe that Peter is watching this thread, and so he may have some comment on whether he is comfortable with people contacting directly or not.
@ Dave - showing your age! (Molly Meldrum indeed :-))

I noticed there are some questions above so here's my attempt to answer them:

Are you able to put any more details of the program up on here. I am already registered, but you might find that once some people see the sort of program on offer they might be more inclined to make the trip down there. I would also be interested to see what i have got myself into and how far out of my comfort zone i will be able to push myself.

Hi folks,
Some spaces are still available for the Light Magic two-day workshop in Bunbury. As you can see from the programme which Broosta posted above, there will be opportunities galore to photograph in a studio and outdoor setting - along such exciting themes as "Dangerous Liaisons", "Cleopatrs" and "Pirates of the Bunburrean".
If you're new to photographing models and studio-based photography, this is a great opportunity to pick up some new skills and knowledges.
If you're interested in joining us, please contact Broosta at jorvik [at] wn.com.au

Had a message from a person who is really, seriously, totally , fully :-) keen to come to the workshop but due to family issues, won't be able to let us know until later in the week . We dont have a problem with remaining flexible about late notice in this case especially , it is the passion and excitement about being involved which is the core of reasons for the creation of this workshop.
But having said that, there is still a couple of spots left, and if anyone is still contemplating coming along, it would be great if you could let us know sooner rather than later! :-)
