Photo Assignment #4: An Assignment with a Twist

view profile

eScapes Photo is a group administrator eScapes Photo  Pro User  says:

I'm going to go a different route with this assignment. This assignment will find us ALL photographing the exact same thing. It will be interesting to see how many different interpretations we can get.

When I started this group, one of my goals was to build a library of photos of things distinctly Peoria. By taking a single object and having us all do a treatment of it, we're liable to get quite a few interesting views.

Because you have to go to the object instead of the object coming to you I'm going to treat this assignment as a month-long job. Therefore, the September assignment is:

401 Water Street

Peoria 401 Water Sunrise

This is one of my favorite buildings in Peoria. Delapidated and empty just a few years ago, it has enjoyed a heck of a comeback. Let's see your shots - by September 30. Post them in MEDIUM SIZE. Good luck!

And that includes ANY part of 401 Water St. You don't need to shoot the whole building per se... but you can.

With a day off and a tummy full of Starbucks, I Jumped ahead on this assignment. I originally went looking for rust on Water St, but found a train instead. I chased this train for 2 blocks to get this photo. (Sure was easier when I was 20 lb lighter!) I have some other stuff from Water Street, but more on that later.

@vlkswagen: i like it! it looks really nice converted to b&w, too. how did you convert? through ps or some other program? trains are cool.

@dave: great idea! i'm eager to see what everyone turns in for this assignment. can't wait to start on it myself but i'm behind this week.

A reminder to the group... the specific assignment is the building at 401 WATER STREET - not just Water St itself. And I'm not just saying that because Mike had the day off and I did not.

Gosh; do I sense a touch of resentment in your post? :)

I did get some stuff from that other spot on W. It will be some work though, perhaps another absence...

@Lily; great question. I haven't hear of the "Oatmeal box" treatment yet!

Lynn Dunaway  Pro User  says:

lola -- pinhole photography -- you clean an oatmeal box, cut out one small (3/4" x 3/4" ) hole in the front...wrap the box and lid with electrical tape...take a tiny needle and poke a tiny hole in the tape over the front cutout...use a couple more pieces of tape as a cover over that pinhole...go to a darkroom...pop the top and insert your print paper...tape the top back on...shield the entire think from light (and heat, too, I think) (I like to put a coat over it)...the paper has to curve inside the oatmeal container...thus, straight lines in the image curve...this image was a 6-second exposure (untape opening, count to 6, tape opening over) at 10 a.m. one morning probably in Sept...take your oatmeal box camera back to the darkroom...put your paper through the B&W printing process...if you want a positive, do a contact print in the darkroom...try it! 401 SW Water St in downtown Peoria:

cross-street is Harrison

come into downtown and take Main (or any of several streets between Main south to Harrison) toward the IL River.

The last street before you drive into parking lots is Water Street -- turn right and come south until you see Hooters on the left, the Bob Michael Bridge ahead of you, and 401 SW Water St on your right -- free parking for 2 hours across on the Hooter's side : ) [o]

if it's near lunchtime, call me 309 282 8119 and I'll meetcha!

@lyn, i wondered if it was a pinhole camera. sounds cool! i really like the image you got. the can gives it a whole different appeal than just your regular square frame. so i take it you have a darkroom in your house? i might have to go visit you just so i can smell the chemicals. ;)

i'll plan on going out to water street sometime next week. was going to go today but my kid woke up sick. my plans got nixed altogether. blah. tell me what's a good day for you. i'd love to meet you!

I credit this image for two reasons... If it wasn't for the Harvest Moon meet-up I don't think I would have taken part in this assignment and Shobal's contribution to this assignment!

I had seen Shobal's image and thought, "Hey... I thought of a shot like that, but I'm to lazy to go down and shoot it at night" then when I was at the meet-up and we were all heading back to our cars I thought, "Hey... I'm here, it's night, I can do this!"

So I did. Thanks to Shobal, Lynn, and the rest of the gang for inspiring this!

OK, here's another entry! I know it's October, but the shot was taken in Sept. Hopefully, the administration will let it slide. ;-) :-)
