About Days of Prayer and Action for Colombia
With over four million people violently forced from their homes, Colombia has just surpassed Sudan as the worst internal displacement crisis in the world. For far too long, the US has been part of the problem, not the solution. US policy towards Colombia has been dominated by displacement-exacerbating military aid, fumigations, and now a proposed NAFTA-style free trade agreement.
On April 19 and 20, hundreds of faith communities, universities, organizations, and individuals called on our government to boldly change US policies towards Colombia. In effort to visibilize Colombia's invisible crisis, advocates presented thousands of paper dolls, representing millions of displaced Colombians, to governmental representatives. Hundreds of faith communities prayed for peace and raised awareness of the urgent crisis. Tens of thousands of faxes and postcards were sent the White House to ask President Obama to chart a new path with Colombia--one that halts the displacement, supports victims of violence, and opens avenues to peace.
