About Parrots & Cockatoos of Australia
Objectives of the group - To present an interesting, varied collection of high quality bird images from the relevant family as described below.
This is an ornithology group with an emphasis on bird behaviour, identification and distribution. We may also improve our bird photography.
Post QUALITY images of Parrots and Cockatoos of the Australian Region, including New Zealand.
I believe we now have enough images of white cockatoos on the back fence, or similar!
In case any members need reminding:
"Parrots, also known as psittacines are birds of the roughly 372 species in 86 genera that make up the order Psittaciformes, found in most tropical and subtropical regions. The order is subdivided into three families: the Psittacidae ('true' parrots), the Cacatuidae (cockatoos) and the Strigopidae (New Zealand parrots). Parrots have a generally pantropical distribution with several species inhabiting temperate regions in the Southern Hemisphere as well. The greatest diversity of parrots is found in South America and Australasia.
Characteristic features of parrots include a strong, curved bill, an upright stance, strong legs, and clawed zygodactyl feet. Many parrots are vividly coloured, and some are multi-coloured. The plumage of cockatoos ranges from mostly white to mostly black, with a mobile crest of feathers on the tops of their heads. Most parrots exhibit little or no sexual dimorphism. They form the most variably sized bird order in terms of length." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parrot
Any other feathered friends may not perch here. Or to put it plainly, any images of non-parrots will be removed without notice.
In line with our sister taxonomic groups, we will no longer be accepting images of birds in cages, zoos or as pets. The existing images of caged and pet birds will be progressively removed by group moderators. Photos of wild birds at the nest are also now frowned upon. This is due to the risk of disturbance causing the parents to desert the nest.
There are plenty of other groups for birds in captivity or posing with their owners. An exception may be made for quality images of rare species in free flight aviaries. Birds in wildlife sanctuaries and nature reserves are acceptable.
Please also refrain from posting duplicate images and multiple variations and/or crops of a bird, they will be deleted. All birds should be plainly seen and not need a magnifying glass.
We now have a group of dedicated moderators to assist with the smooth running of the group. However any member is welcome to drop me a flickr mail if you see any images that do not appear to belong here.
Cheers, and enjoy the group, Jack
