Geotags

Geotagging your pictures means to indicate where you've taken the picture.
This is a new way to surf through someone's picture, or through the picture of a group, because you jump from one location to another on an actual map.
So this is cool, let's see how to do it
Let me tell you how to geotag your pictures:
- first you need to know the location
go to maps.google.com/
type an adress
once you've got the map, click on "get the URL of this page"
(beware to click each time you've updated your adress, as the link in the URL bar does not update by itself)
In the URL you'll get something like this
"http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=fr&q=place+de+la+bastille+paris&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=">maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=fr&q=place+de+la+bast..">maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=fr&q=place+de+la+bast...">maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=fr&q=place+de+la+bast....48.853004,2.369442&spn=0.003502,0.013561&om=1&iwloc=addr"
the two bold numbers, separated by a comma, are the two geotag we're looking for.
For a street, a place, once you've got it on the screen, just double click on the map in the center of it before asking for the URL, you'll have a more precise location.
- Now let's use those two values for the pictures:
Click on "Organize"
Click on "Map"
Double click the picture you want to geotag
In the pop-up window, click on "location"
copy/paste the two numbers you've got from google maps, in latitude and longitude
Click on "Save"
You should see your picture appearing on the map now (if you're above Paris of course ;o)
Then you just have to click and drop all the other pictures taken at the same location, on top of the picture you've just put on the map.
------------------------------------------------------
If you're using Firefox, you can install Greasemonkey, a new functionnality that let you install small script to further customize the look of flickr.
And once you have greasemonkey installed, you can install the script "Flickr Photo Compass". Once you will be on any geotag picture, you will have a compass loading on the right of your window, showing nearby photo, in the respective eight direction.
This will allow you to "visit" Paris this way.

What' s geotagging and how do you do it? Just a zip code, or something more complex?

This is something you do from the "organize my picture" panel.
There is a new tab with "map" written on it. If you click on it, you see a map of the world on which you can drag your picture.
As the map of Paris is not that accurate, the best is to go to google map, type the adress of where you took the picture and click on "link to this page".
In the url of the page you're on, appears the coordinates like this:
blablablalll=48.866691,2.365526&sblablabla
From "organize your picture" double click one picture, go to lovation atb and copy paste this two coordinates.
If you then go on your map, you will this picture on its right spot, you can then add the rest of your picture, you took at the same place by clicking and dragging them on top of the one you've already put on the map.
It sounds hard, but it is not, and it is so cool to see your picture on a map.

Thanks for the answer!
I just geotagged four of my photos with the map on organizer; funny to see the link to the map appear to the photo page!
True, the map of Paris is not accurate (that's an understatement), but it is still probably enough to locate the main monuments; I'm not sure I'll go through the google map process at this point, but I got the whole idea now.

This: www.flickr.com/groups/geotagging/discuss/72157594165549916/ is an excellent geo-tagging tool. When you are on the page displaying the photo you want to geo-tag, just click the link to the bookmarklet (once you've saved it of course) and then click on the map where you took the photo. It will automatically tag your photo with the co-ordinates.

@Findo: thank you for the link; it seems like a really nice tool... reading all the comments; but I can't seem to make it work; I've saved the bookmark, but when I'm on my photopage (for instance, the last one i posted on this group), clicking just brings me back to the bookmark page: labs.sumaato.net/tools/flickr_geocode_bookmarklet/ and nothing else happens.
What am I missing? (I'm working on a Mac, OS 10.3.9 with Safari, maybe that's not what's needed)

that's the link to the page the bookmarklet is on.. the bookmarklet itself is you need to get it from the little box that says "don't waste time, grab it here"..

242 pictures are geotag, it's getting better, but a lot of work still needs to be done ;o)

What I think is, Why in Hell's name would you want to "geotag" your photos in the first place? So that others can easily go there and take the same snap? What's the point of that?
:o)))

Do u really need to geotag when it's the Eiffel tower..? The name of the street or landmark should be enough, don't u think?
