Anyone?
If not, are there any good telephotos with thread mounts?

I don't have a telephoto lens but I do know that is you switch your camera settings to 5m instead of the standard 7m you get a telemacro mode and 14.4x zoom

Yeah I have have a digital optics, telephoto wide and macro. The only thing to remember is too zoom in enough that you are not taking a picture of the lens. I have taken alot of shot with these lenses and have enjoyed them.

I have a raynox 1.8 tele convertor and am as pleased as i can be with it,. Raynox seem to have various magnifications and at variying prices.
The lens i got was a discontinued line from Jessops on ebay and i picked up for about £25 +pp
I was also informed that olympus tcon works well
Here are a few shots taken with the raynox tele lens

I have the olympus tcon-17. It's 1.7x magnification same as the Panasonic lens but quite a bit cheaper. I've been very happy with the results so far.

I purchased a Raynox 2.2 Hi Def Telephoto Conversion lens and it came with adaptor rings that fit my FZ8. I totally love it. That's what I use everytime i take a moon shot, and I get really good results. I think I paid around $130.00 for it.

Doberdad,
this is very interesting, could you tkae 2 pictures of the moon 1 with the telephoto adaptor and 1 without so that it will be posssible to compare the pictures and have a good idea of the image quality with this adaptor.

Sure! These were taken during different phases of the moon, but I think you can see the difference in focus, anyhow.
First one was taken just using a tripod and the 12x zoom (I never use the digital zoom feature, simply because I dont like the results)

2nd one was taken using a tripod and the telephoto conversion lens.

The image looks sharper, but it could come from better atmospheric conditions and it is very hard to compare different phases. The image at the border shadow,/light is usually very fine, so if you could post 2 pictures taken at 5 minutes interval with and without the adaptor it would be very fine.
Thanks.

OK, jeanthie, I took a couple of shots tonight to compare the focus with and without the telephoto lens.
Click on the photos to see at larger size and to get EXIF data.
1st one is without telephoto

2nd one was just a couple of minutes later, same camera settings, but with telephoto attached

CA? What does CA mean? (sorry but I am still learning and don't have a clue)

Thanks, David, for explaining to me that CA stands for Chromatic aberration. You made me sort of cringe before I knew what you were talking about! LOL I didnt want to do any after-editing to these simply because I was only showing the difference in the focus capabilities of straight camera vs added telephoto, but I appreciate your advice and expertise.

Thank you Doberdad, your shots are excellent and show the advantages and the limits of this telephoto. We see a lot more details on your pictures with the telephoto but there is some CA. To avoid CA you can try to open at f 5.-6 instead of f 3.3
I am slightly surprised both photos were taken at 1/400 F3.3 Normally you should lose 2 stops with the telephoto and take the photo with the telephoto at 1/100 to get the same light.
i looked your Bird album, pictures are very nice, did you take some of them with the telephoto ? I could not see Ca in "your birds" .

Thanks, and I was just recently (today) made aware of the CA issue. Now that I know what to look for, maybe I can try harder to avoid it, or at least correct it later. No telephoto on the bird photos, though. I just try my best to get as close as possible and only use the built-in zoom. I have missed a few bird shots because I couldnt get as close as I wanted to be. Another thing about the telephoto, it emphasises "jitter" also, so I find a tripod a necessary thing for me personally.

Doberdad, I have taken your shot with the telephoto and postprocessed it in Photoshop elements. Here is the result, nobody can complain about CA.

here's a moonshot taken at x12 and using the x4 digital as well... it's about the best I've ever got that way but it's certainly no match for the teleconvertor...
