I love these pictures! I was looking at the raynox 250 and I was wondering what adapter(s) are needed for the fz8?

the raynox dcr250 can be fitted to 52-67mm filter mounts (snap-on mounting) - so the included hood adapter is appropriate.

i havent gotten mine yet :( i hate waiting on shipping.. its in the mail just not in my hands yet.. everyday i see more and more macros and they look great.. it comes with snap on mounting.. or you can buy a step down ring but its not needed.. if you put the lens adapter that comes w/the fz8 then a uv filter.. you can just snap the raynox on that

i also bought a raynox dcr 250 today, and it seems fine. in normal macro mode, the lens wont do that much magnification, but when used in telemacro... its about 4-8 times larger! it is however, much harder in telemacro mode to find focus, theobject distance has to be about 15 centimeters (5-6 inches), or youll end up with blur. i'll post images as soon as i can make some.

yah im used to macro by getting extremely close to the subject but with the raynox its about 5-6" like you said away.. all i did was move the fz8 back and forth and found almost focus and auto focus finished the reset.. i took sample shots handheld though.. with a tripod they would come out clear and sharp.. i too will post more when i find a GOOD subject :)

i had some more time to play with the dcr 250, and ill share my experiences with you:
the object distance is always between 20-10 centimeters (4-8 inces). its easier to use the lens with normal autofocus, macro mode is not needed.
if you do macro shots with extreme close-up (72mm focal dist, 12x zoom) you should use f/8 aperture, or the depth of field will be VERY shallow. in order to use f/8, the usage of flash is almost inevitable (in case you dont have a totally static object AND a tripod).
because of the object distance, the built in flash can provide good lighting in total closeup, but when the magnification is lower, the hood adapter (and the macro lens mount) will cast a shadow on the subject (this can be eliminated by constructing a cone-line diffusor, or with an external flash).
if you plan to shoot from hand, and there isn't much light around, increasing the flash power (+2EV), and using manual exposure of f/8 aperture with 1/1600 sec shutter speed can elimininate hand shake, and you might end up with a crisp image :)

Because of this very shallow DoF I'm considering the DCR-150 which has half the magnification of the 250.
Anyone here with an experience of the 150?

you can set half the magnification rate on the 250, by only zooming to 6x, not 12x :) (the DoF changes accordingly)

Mine's arrived!
I haven't had a chance to use it yet apart from a few test pics of coins. It seems like it will be… a challenge. Maybe when I get outdoors in good light it will all fall into place.
I'll be posting some over the weekend, good or bad. (Bad, most likely!)

Okay, here are my first efforts with this.
It's very difficult to use, but I felt I was starting to know what I was doing by the time I had finished. Settings are still a bit of a mystery, but I settled on f8, 1/200, flash. I was hand-holding the camera which meant it was difficult to focus on the bit I wanted to focus on, and everything looks sharper on the small LCd anyway so I lost quite a few that I thought were okay. Had to use stabiliser setting 1 as well.
Here's a couple of samples. They're not great by any means, but good enough to encourage me to keep trying with it!

Nice pics!
I think a tripod is mandatory with the Raynox. I'm still debating if I'll got one. I'm not very satisfied with the DOF I see with picture taken with this lens. The magnification is incredible though.

Well I got my Raynox yesterday and I tested it out today with some good results. I just shoot it on Aperture priority and try to keep it a steady hand. I usually zoomed only 6x.

I received today a Raynox 250 and it does not seem to work well.
Holding the aperture at 8.0, I have tried to autofocus, macro, manual focus, I also tried many distances to the object, but once I touch the zoom key, the image becomes totally blur.
Anything wrong with my settings? The lens looks fine, so does my camera.

I don't think there's anything wrong. The focus distance is always about six inches or so. It barely changes no matter how much you zoom in or out, not like macro mode on the camera where you have to go very close for a wider angle and stand well back at full zoom. It's a bit strange at first but once you get it once you'll be fine.
I don't use mine on macro mode, I didn't notice any difference with it.

I'm considering DCR-150 as not to be very very close to the subject. Any comment guys....or should I just go ahead with DCR250.

I guess an easy way to explain it is, you have to move the actual camera back and forth to focus whatever your taking a picture of. So auto focus and manual focus doesn't make a difference. I've found using the ISO mode pictures come out good... atleast during the day time.

I added these pictures to the group, but thought i'd post them in here just in case nobody goes back very often to look through the pictures. These are pictures I took of a jumping spider I found outside of my window the other day. I brought it back inside and put it on a piece a paper while I took pictures of it. This is more proof of the amazing power of the Raynox DCR-250.

OMG!! These are incredible!! I tried to find the Raynox 250 here in the UK by doing a web search but I can't ... is anyone here from the UK who has bought one of these advise me where you got yours from? I am a bit worried about buying from outside the UK because everytime I buy something from outside the UK, I always get stung by extra taxes by Customs!! Must be my luck! LOL!

Wow these look amazing (though pretty scary!)
What's the difference between using one of these Raynox devices and using traditional screw-on close-up filters?
Also, when using any of these things (telephoto / wide angle / close up convertor), is it important to tell the camera you've put something on the front (as it recommends in the instruction manual)? Does this actually change some settings or something?

Amazing! Objects in the foreground next to subject also merit some interest. The pod-like stems next to the black and white beetle (3rd photo from top of thread) are very strange looking. What is that!?

Also, by reading this guys flickr page, it looks like some of his pictures were taken with the Raynox MSN 202, which is a crazy 9.3X diopter. The Raynox DCR-250 is only a 2.5x diopter. If I had to guess I'd say that the first picture in this thread was either a very big bug and taken with the DCR-250, or he used that MSN-202. I haven't been able to get crazy magnifications like in that first pic with the DCR-250.

Wow, those shots are great!
I've only recently got a FZ8 and don't really know much about photography. Is this just a lens that fits on the one on the camera and magnifies things hugely? Do you need anything other than what the FZ8 came with for it to work? Any help greatly appreciated. :)

The Raynox DCR-250 and -150 come with a snap-on adaptor that can fit cameras with 52-67mm filter mounts. The FZ8 has a 52mm filter mount, so you're pretty much good to go.
I've recently bought a Raynox DCR-150, and am pretty pleased with some of the results I'm getting (although using a tripod is really, really useful).
Good luck!

Here are some photos I took with a Raynox-250 lens. The photos are ok, but I find it really difficult to get a good focus (1-2 mm can make a huge difference), especially if the object is slightly moving, which actually happens most of the times. The "tips for easy and accurate focusing" in the user's guide that came with the camera are somewhat contradictory, at the beginning it says "it's recommended to use a firm tripod", then three lines further it says "it will be easy to get fine focusing by moving the camera back and forth towards the object". Yeah, try to move the camera 1-2 mm while on a tripod!
Anyway, here are some of my pics:

and lastly, just to see the magnifying range of the lens:

Sorry for the long post :-)

zuro_dtl: I bought my lens online, from a Japanese site, but I cannot remember if it was from raynox.co.jp site or some other shop selling it. It cost about 5000 yen, arrived in a couple of days, and the lens adapter that was included in the kit works perfectly for the FZ-8. All you need to do is to unpack it and mount it on your camera :-)

I wonder if the Raynox MSN 202 for the Olympus would work with the FZ8.....it looks like a clip-on like the Raynox-250.
