About pan_mass
This community is for photographs taken during -- and discussions pertaining to -- the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, an annual charity bicycle ride that raises money for cancer research, treatment, and prevention at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Past, current, and prospective PMC riders, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters are all welcome to post, read, and participate in this group.
The PMC is an annual bicycle ride that raises money for the Jimmy Fund, which is the fundraising arm of Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. DFCI provides expert, compassionate care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases.
Founded in 1980, the PMC now raises over $30 million each year, comprising half of the Jimmy Fund’s annual income. A quarter million people sponsor riders.
The PMC raises twice as much money as any other athletic fundraiser in the nation. It also has extremely low overhead; with 100% of every dollar raised by riders going directly to the Jimmy Fund.
Approximately 5,500 riders and 2,700 volunteers participate in the PMC each year. There are several routes to choose from, but the classic ride runs 192 miles from Sturbridge to Bourne to Provincetown over the course of two days in early August.
Being a PMC rider takes stamina, strength of will, and the ability to overcome pain. However, those attributes are demanded in much greater quantities every day from cancer victims and their families. When we ride, we are demonstrating our willingess to lend our strength to those who are in need of it.
Someday, we will live in a world free of cancer, and we’re getting closer by the mile.
