Un poco de Historia de los Palomares

El palomar es una seña de identidad de las tierras de Castilla y León, de la misma forma que lo es el hórreo de Galicia o el molino de la Mancha.

La existencia del palomar está íntimamente relacionada a la tradición popular. Sus orígenes se remontan a la época de los romanos en la península que convirtieron nuestra comarca en campo de experimentación de la tradición del cuidado y explotación de las palomas, esto unido a la tradición romana de incluir las cenizas de sus difuntos en pequeños nichos, situados en las paredes de los “columbarios” (lugares de enterramiento), hace que nuestra comarca se especialice en el cuidado y la explotación de las palomas.

Los palomares suelen situarse en los alrededores de los pueblos, existiendo de todos los tamaños y de diferentes formas, como circulares, cuadrados, rectangulares...

Su arquitectura está adaptada a la realidad física, en donde el barro, se convierte en el material base, utilizado de dos maneras: el tapial y el adobe.

El dovecote is a characterístic of Castilla y León, how the hórreo of Galicia or the mill of La Mancha. The origin of the pigeon comes from the Roman tradition of care and operation of the pigeons, but it’s at the end of the s. XVIII when the dovecotes became culture and tradition, and a complement of the land’s work.
This and that writers how Machado and Unamuno described in their books, makes pigeon becomes not only a way of life, unless a sociological phenomenon because of the symbolic importance of it in these lands.
Its architecture is suited to the physical reality of the land, where the mud, becomes the base material that we use for the construction. The dovecotes are usually placed at the vicinity of the villages, although also appear in the middle of the steppe as if they were real giants that guard the passage of birds and the slow growth of cereal.
The pigeons and some other birds use the nests like halls, where there aren’t any tree or any construction. The low production that the man obtained from them and from a few decades ago has led to a gradual abandonment, in many cases led to their destruction, anyway there is still a good part of them in an acceptable state.
The variety is the common denominator of these buildings we can encounter dovecotes square, rectangular, polygonal, circular, semi-circular, horseshoe, cylindrical, with patio, courtyard without, ornamentation, wrongly, etc.…
