I downloaded it. Seems to do what it's supposed to do just fine. I like the feature that lets you use a specific tag, and display photos that show that tag as your wallpaper. It will also pull from a particular user or the iPhones wallpaper group.

Flickr Addict Lite (which is free) is now out, so we in Europe finally get to play with it. I can't actually see what it doesn't do that the full version does. Looks like a nice app.

Hope it's only pulling CC-licenced photos...

FlickrAddict Lite only allows you to download 3 photos a day for the daily rotation, and you can only select 1 hour or 6 hour switching frequencies. The other options (available in the full app) are greyed out.

Hi guys,

I'm the author of Flickr Addict. I'm really glad you like it, but there's much better to come. There's a new version of both Flickr Addict and Flickr Addict Lite in review at the moment that give you a much better gallery for viewing the images. The Xmas holidays will probably delay it's approval a bit, but it should be out soon.

See my blog post about it here - shaneosullivan.wordpress.com/2009/12/22/flickr-addict-get...

Of course, people who have existing versions get the updates for free.

Enjoy!

Thanks for coming by Shane! The random feature will be nice, and a gallery view could even start it down the path of being a nice general purpose Flickr browser. It would be nice to have an option for switching the desktop every 15 minutes, as every 5 is quick quick! But with a random option, I'm not sure that's as important. Finally, while dopiaza's set manager can be used to help create sets, allowing tagged photos from a particular user would be nice.

One other thing. Not sure, but I think I may be getting a memory leak running your app. I've been getting "too many cards" message a lot lately. I'd been thinking it was DrPodder causing the issue, but now I've run into this problem a couple times while running only standard apps. The only other possibility is Twee, but I've been using that for months and never had quite this problem.

Seems to have gotten much worse when I started changing the wallpaper every 5 minutes.

And thanks again.

It's really a fun app, shane. Another feature request: it would be nice to have a few more options for how to handle landscape oriented photos-- "center" gives a square crop, which is probably my preferred compromise, but I'd also like options to rotate them or zoom in enough to fit the screen.

Thanks for reaching out to the fans :).

shaneosullivan  Pro User  says:

jakerome, I haven't seen the memory problem myself, but I'll look into it. You say it got worse when you change the wallpaper more often? Strange, I'm simply calling the Palm service for setting a wallpaper. I hope they don't have a memory leak in that code.

Kelvin, I'm looking into enabling pan and zoom for setting wallpapers. I probably won't do rotation though, as it's a bit tricker.

jakerome is a group administrator jakerome  Pro User  says:

actually, now I think it was Twee notifications causing the problem. So FlickrAddict probably isn't responsible.

too bad rotation is so tricky-- I wouldn't be bothered if my pics were posted sideways since the orientation of the Pre is so flexible.

The new version does seem a lot slicker, thanks. I love the concept of the randomize feature, but in practice, how does it work? It seems to heavily weigh the latest 20 images in a stream or set. Any way to make it truly random, or is that a limitation of the Flickr API?

shaneosullivan  Pro User  says:

Hi Kelvin,

You're asking about the secret sauce? ;-) The Flickr api doesn't support randomness, as you'd expect. Flickr Addict simply reads in way more photo data than it needs, randomizes that array, and chooses the first X number.

E.g. if it needs 10 photos from a user, it'll pull down info on 60 or so of them, and randomly choose from those. However, if you have hundreds of photos it won't work as well, but for sets it works much better. I have to balance performance/data usage against the usefulness of the random feature. Some people have thousands of photos, and it's not feasible to download them all unfortunately.

KelvinLi is a group administrator KelvinLi  Pro User  says:

Thanks Shane, sounds like reason enough to buy the full version :). With the 3 images that you get in the Lite version, it's not going deep enough into the set that I want randomized, but it looks like that's resolved by buying the full version (well-deserved by the way!)

Thanks

I don't know if this is the place for bug reports, Shane, but I just noticed a strange quirk with the randomize feature. For both my entire stream and for a new set I just created, Flickr Addict is pulling the most recent photos, regardless of how many photos I request, despite me choosing random as my selection type. However, if I try using older sets, I will get a random selection of photos. Does this make any sense to you that newer sets are treated differently?

dvdmon says:

Hi Shane, and thanks for a great app! Can I suggest a few enhancements to consider for your to-do list?

I can't seem to edit the settings for my flickr users (set their images to random vs. later). It seems the only way around this now is to delete them and then re-ad with the setting you need.

Any chance you could up the number of images and/or frequency and/or add the ability to optionally download more frequently than 1/day? Right now the max is 60 images and switch every five minutes. This means that the images will repeat every 5 hours or about 5 times each day. I'd love to make it so I could load a new image at least every 5 minutes and not have them repeat at all, or at most just once per day. I know that would be a lot of pictures (144 or 288 respectively - more even if you want to provide for more often then once every 5 minutes). But it would be pretty cool!

I don't know if flickr's API provides for this, but it would be nice to be able to see a person's images that aren't accessible by the general public but are accessible to your flickr account (if you are a freind/family/contact).

Finally, another nice little feature might be to allow users to save an image from the gallery of downloaded images.

Again, thanks for the great app!

shaneosullivan  Pro User  says:

Hi dvdmon,

You're very welcome, glad you like it.

Editing user settings is in the pipeline, a few people have asked for that.

I suppose I could up the max photos to 100 or so.

For accessing private photos, I'd need to add Flickr authentication capabilities. A number of people have asked for it, but I'm not sure if I'll find the time for a while, as it's a bit more complex than the other small changes.

As for saving images, I don't intend to do that, as there could be issues with permissions for other users photos. I figure if I'm just setting them as the wallpaper it's fine, but if I let users easily copy the images the issue of ownership gets a bit murkier. You can still link to the Flickr web page and download it from there, but I'd feel uncertain about the legality of including it in my app.

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming!

Hi Kelvin,

The new version out today has introduced a dashboard stage to get around this problem. I'm very annoyed at Palm for breaking all the background apps - they said that it's to stop memory leaks, but when they kill a background app it keeps all it's memory intact, so they just caused even more memory leaks.

Let me know if the new version doesn't work for you. It seems fine for me.

I actually like the idea of a dashboard stage, as it would give some feedback if I happen to be using the phone at midnight as to what's slowing it down, etc. Installed the new version, but haven't seen the new dashboard in action yet.

I did notice that multiple sets from the same user are still verboten. I hope you still plan on adding that?

Surprised to hear that killing drawn out background apps in 1.4 doesn't flush the memory. So there are no benefits?

I tried to get galleries working, but the Flickr API for galleries is strangely broken. It'll let you find out what galleries a user has created, and what galleries a particular photo is in, but you can't list the photos in a gallery. So unfortunately it isn't possible right now.

As for the favorites, do they really need authentication? I logged out of Flickr and can still see users' favorites (although not any favorites that are private). From their favorites page, there's a RSS link. Does that mean it's available for whatever Flickr API Flickr Addict requires? I'd settle for the public faves from a selected user. It would be a cool way to pick trusted photographers to be the curators of your wallpaper gallery.

Jake,

Thanks for the tweet, it's great that Palm picked it up! The reason that photos for a given location might not be found is that Flickr only supports getting photos from a location that were taken in the last 12 hours. It's something to do with not murdering the database with massive distance calculations. So, choosing a popular place will work best.

Flickr actually uses "Flickr Auth", which was apparently the basis on which OAuth was created. However, it's a good bit simpler to implement.

So yeah, this was the first step in writing a full Flickr app. The fancy new thumbnail view was written for that, and I should be able to reuse large chunks of the code. Might just call it Flickr Addict Pro :-)

As for Plickr, the developer, Inglorious Apps, is very good and has written some very useful apps, so I might even download it myself.

But mine will rock so much harder :-)

Glad to hear it :-) Though the plan is for Pro to go beyond wallpapers to "everything else", including printing.

Hey guys,

Would you be interested in trying out a beta of Flickr Addict Pro? I've been working on it quite a bit, and next week should have something worth looking at.

I'm really looking for feedback on this, as I don't want it to be "just another" Flickr client - I want it to kick the ass of anything on any platform. To do that, I guess i have to give guys like you exactly what you want :-)

Shane, I'd love to try out a beta of Flickr Addict Pro, please!

And thanks for all the work you've done on apps up to now (I play Mazer as much as the expensive games I bought from EA!).

Fantastic, thanks guys!

This weekend is when a large chunk of the work will be done. You guys gave me some great suggestions for the app at www.flickr.com/groups/palmpre/discuss/72157623828207811/ , but if you have any more I'm very interested.

I looked into getting group discussion support into it, but the reason you don't see it in any other Flickr app is that they just don't support it. Which sucks. However, I'll see how much I can get in this weekend - it should be plenty for an initial beta at least.

OK, obvious things like having a browser that shows nothing but the photo. Swipe left & right to move within the context. Swipe up & down to change contexts. So if I discover a photo from my contacts, swiping left shows a photo from the net contact. Swiping down shows the same photo, but indicates that the context has changed-- it will now be in Kelvin's stream. Up & down some more to show the sets/groups it's in. Then left & right swipes to navigate within the group. Largely inspired by the recent Flickr redesign.

But that's pretty specific. Being able to search nearby photos and then sort by date, relevance or interestingness would be dandy. Slideshow is obvious. Blog this capability would be great, too.

Basically, I want it to do everything!
