About Oxford Castle
Built in 1071 by Norman Baron Robert D'Oyly after the Norman conquest in 1066.
The collegiate chapel of St. George preceded Oxford University by 200 years.
Brief home to the Empress Matilda in the 12th century.
Birthplace of the Black Assize in 1577.
A prison for hundreds of years and only opened to the public in 2006.
Now a tourist attraction housing Oxford Unlocked, the Malmaison Hotel and various shops and restaurants.
