About Oxenhope

The first records of Oxenhope date back nearly 1000 years. Originally a wooded area, it was cleared for cattle farming and takes it name fron oxen. A 1661 Act of Parliament by King Charles II gave common land rights in Oxenhope to local farmers.The Act for Dividing and Enclosing Oxenhope Moors of 1771 further shaped the mingling of the hamlets of Fly Flatts, Upper Marsh, Marsh, Shaw, Leeming. Westcroft Head, Uppertown and Lowertown that we see today.
