About Ouseburn Trust

This group is for photographs relating to the work of the Ouseburn Trust. It is hoped this group will act as a repository fo pictr the Trusts photographic archive. Feel free to post pictures of both the past and present.

The Ouseburn runs for 9 miles from its source at Callerton Pond, with a catchment are of around 24 miles of rural and urban land. The Lower Ouseburn Valley was originally part of the township of Byker, one of the first outside Newcastle town walls. Prior to the Industrial Revolution the valley was mainly agricultural - its present name is thought to have derived from 'Ewe's Burn', reflecting this usage.

Industrial development came early to the area, and by the seventeenth century mills and glassworks were in production. This represents some of the earliest modern industrial activity on Tyneside. Great changes took place throughout the following two centuries as industry developed in the valley, initially based on ballast generated by the burgeoning coal trade but later using the Ouseburn itself, nearby river transport and easy access to coal and water power.
