About Our Soccer

BRIEF BRIEF

Generate a SERIES/SUITE of original photographs that reflect your PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF SOCCER in terms of your own social environment. Represent soccer as a game which reflects wider social issues as a cultural/community/family/neighbourhood cultural activity. In other words consider that the images you generate may go beyond showing the game itself but also document and reflect on THE LIFE THAT SURROUNDS it or the social activities manifested/expressed by it. You could, for example, say something powerful about your own neighbourhood through the documentation of the spaces in which children play soccer, or about the character of your family through the way food is prepared and consumed at a soccer match, or how cultural/social/religious political boundaries are crossed in playing the game. A suite of photographs for example could attest to the perseverance of players from disadvantaged backgrounds seeking access to particular clubs or comment on the privilege of soccer played in more affluent areas in Johannesburg. It could also simply document the fashions and clothing associated with soccer played within a particular community. The point is that your suite of images should attempt to offer an original perspective on the game as it is manifested in the everyday lives of people living in South Africa. Consider that soccer is a sociable activity that prompts a range of human activities. So your suite of images could represent the game itself, but also begin to comment on cultural values in South Africa.

•Body language. The nonverbal communication used by teams and supporters.
•Suburban and township clubs and schools. The developmental aspect of soccer.
