About Other Mimicry

Species that pretend to be things they are not for some kind of benefit.

This group was inspired by a discussion from the Protective Mimicry group and is intended as a catch-all for anything not covered in the other mimicry groups. It will hopefully be a showcase for variety in the natural world and creativity on the part of the group members to think of what should be in this pool!

To post in this group, a picture must satisfy the test of not being relevant to these other groups:

- Bee mimics belong in the Bee Mimicry.

- Mimicing inanimate objects belongs in the Crypsis group.

- Camouflage belongs in the Camouflage group

- Mimicing another species which has a special defense such as poison belongs in the Protective Mimicry group.

Don't be discouraged - there are many, many other types of mimicry that DO belong in this group: flowers mimicing the look and scent of female bees or rotting flesh for polination, birds mimicing predator bird calls to frighten other birds away, chicks that mimic the young of another bird species to get fed, fish with body parts that mimic the sun or a smaller fish to attract prey... the list goes on and on.

The only other rule is to state in your photo description why it belongs in this group.

This is a public group, and kind of obscure, so feel free to invite anyone to post anything that would qualify to be in this group. You can cut and paste the following HTML:

Please consider posting this to the
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/other_mimics/">Other Mimicry</a>
group.

In other groups, it is sometimes lame to start a discussion, "does this photo belong in this group?" Not so in Other Mimicry - that's the whole point of this group. When in doubt, start a discussion!
