You know, that is so true. I have yet to incorporate an octagon into a tessellation.
Is this challenge restricted to regular octagons? There was no specification in the OP, but maybe you had implied it?

No worries, I'll come up with something octagon related, somehow!

I'm certainly not insistent upon regular octagons - flexibility and artistic interpretation is all up to you. Art doesn't have boundaries, but of course what speaks to you might not speak to me, and vice versa.
Just looking for themes that acknowledge octagons!
and I would prefer tessellations (given the general nature of this group) but if you have something else that you feel would go nicely together, feel free to use the same tag "Octagons for October" and I will consider that as well :)
I'd like to point out that 8.8.4 symmetry offers a lot to work from... really I'm just interested in seeing some people try something new, for the fun of it!
some beautiful octagonal tessellations from Andy Wilson
Chris Palmer has a zillion excellent octagonal pieces, so it's very doable - but let's also think outside the box here, and not just basic tilings too... I'm excited to see what happens.
(December will hold something completely different, I assure you)

Ok then, I've made a design for the OfO challenge:

I've been calling the decoration the "saw molecule" since the higher order the polygon gets, the more it looks like a saw...

...It's not october until today, guys! You've still got a whole month to keep this up! :-P
...Speaking of which, that's my intention-- a new octagonal model every day, and I'm going to try and avoid repeating themes beyond that. Wish me luck!
With that said, and seeing the level of activity already present, I'm wondering if we should be posting our photos here in this thread... that'll be a lot of photos if we're not careful!

You can certainly post your entries to this thread - that's perfectly acceptable, and I don't think it will swamp things too much.
However, for consideration in the "official" contest (hehe) one must use the tag "Octagons for October". Please use that exact phrase - the quotes make Flickr treat the whole thing as a single tag.
I will also search for octagonsforoctober as a tag too, though, so if you prefer that is also OK.
at the end of the month, I'll be out in San Francisco for the Pacific Rim Origami conference - along with Christine, Oschene, and Goran - and hopefully we can pick a good winner. Providing they don't vote for their own work, of course :)
I'm already thrilled with the number of octagon entries! my goodness. and it's only just October, now... how can we keep this up for a month? Y'all are pretty fast!

Natan, flagstones are a certain type of tessellation. Flagstones happen when you take a waterbomb tessellation and turn each of the waterbombs into a twist fold.

So many octagons... and we're coming up on the end of the contest!
Just a heads up that your photo submissions need to be tagged with either "Octagons for October" (use the quotes!) or octagonsforoctober for me to find them.
I will be doing the final selection of the winner and posting the results on November 4th, which is a pretty big day of selecting winners here in the US. I'll be on a plane for most of the day so I'll have time to mull over the submissions - but I need to know they're there for me to choose them :) So double-check your tags everyone!

New scientific discovery!
October is not over yet! 2 scientists from MIT discovered that according to The Aztec calendar, every 888 years October should have an extra week! This is done to please Octagod, the god of the people who have got a cold! Since the last time it happened was in 1120 AD, October 2008 is still here! So all of you who are waiting for things to happen after the end of this month - do not lose hope, October is soon to be ended!!
