About Open Technology Initiative

The Open Technology Initiative is a group of technologists, policy experts, community organizers, planners, developers, entrepreneurs, and academics who work together in support of open architectures and open-source innovations. OTI is dedicated to facilitating the development and implementation of open technologies and communications networks, and to maximizing the potential of innovative open technologies by studying their social, cultural, and economic impact – particularly for poor, rural, and other underserved constituencies. OTI promotes affordable, universal, and ubiquitous communications networks through partnerships with communities, researchers, industry, and public interest groups, develops open-source community technology platforms, and provides objective research, analysis, findings, and policy and regulatory recommendations for decision-makers and the general public.

We understand that the ability to communicate freely without fear of censorship or constraint is a fundamental right of all people. We undertake projects and advance policies that expand the free exercise of those rights for everyone.
