David Hurn - Passing Time

view profile

Dr Karanka says:

UPDATE 25/10/2010: the deadline for submissions is Wednesday 27th of October at 7pm GMT! Get your pairs in before the thread closes.

UPDATE 20/10/2010: instead of 3 pairs, 5 pairs will be selected for the exhibition. The author of each of these will receive a signed copy of Writing the Picture.

--------------------

"Passing Time" by David Hurn will open at Third Floor Gallery on the 18th of November, and we're looking for your collaboration in curating this exhibition. David thought about a little artificial ploy to show the passage of time in his work. That is, to divide the 55 years of his photographic life to date in two parts: before and after 1982. By this means, pairs of photographs are presented together which have both the familiar and dissimilar elements of having been taken years apart.

David has already prepared most of the pairs, but we have allowed room for three more pairs to be curated by members of the public. Thus we are asking you to browse the Magnum archives and find pairs of images from David Hurn's work. These can match in content or form, place or texture, the only rule being that one has to be taken before 1982 and the other after 1982.

The best pair will win a signed copy of David's latest book: Writing the Picture

David Hurn's portfolio on the Magnum website

How to propose the pairs? On the Magum's website there is a Search field. One way is to type there keywords and hurn, for example hurn portrait, or hurn hair, hurn animal, hurn dog... Whatever you can think of. Then you can paste them here in this thread using img src HTML tags or simple http links.

Hope you like the idea and we are looking forward for your pairs.

--------------------

admin edit:

if anyone has any problems here is the html code for embedding images from non-flickr sources

right click the image, copy its location/url (may differ for web browsers, sometimes view image or image properties) and then wrap it in this:

<img src="place image link here"/>

eg

<img src="http://www.magnumphotos.com/CoreXDoc/MAG/Media/TR3/5/a/a/7/LON16351.jpg"/>

Left: Cafe with photo of Dylan Thomas. 1974
Right: R.S. Thomas. Famous Welsh Poet.1997

Two Welsh poets with the last name Thomas. There is a cultural conflict illustrated here. Dylan Thomas was more famous than RS Thomas, but he wrote in English while RS Thomas was against the anglicisation of Wales. Some of RS's work is seen as a challenge to Dylan. (blagging off Wikipedia)

All of these pairings seem so literal. What about comparisons based on an emotional or less obvious level?
Posted 31 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

monkeyfinger  Pro User  says:

Very good question, I was trying to do something like that, but with limited time at work it proved difficult. Given some time it will be interesting to see some more meditative pairings.

I will admit that mine are pretty lazy - the first pair are actually next to each other on the magnum website.

EDIT: One final point - I've always found that edits like that are far easier with a bunch of prints on a table or floor, rather than with images on a screen. Maybe that's a cop-out

I think digging into the archive on the Magnum website for this purpose is really difficult. Pictures are tiny and covered in watermarks. Captions are literal, so you are easily pushed into searching that way. Give it a try Blake :)

I think grasas's, nemanja's and tijo's two go beyond the literal pairing slightly and in a nice way. I particularily like the bill jay / cactus pairing.

UPDATE

David Hurn really likes the response, so the public involvement has been upped. Instead of 3 pairings, there will be 5 pairings selected for the exhibition, and EACH of the selected pairs will receive a signed book.

Would you mind terribly going back and editing that post, adding a line that says something like " html code for embedding images from non-flickr sources" that would highlight it in a search of the group's discussions?
