Two Welsh poets with the last name Thomas. There is a cultural conflict illustrated here. Dylan Thomas was more famous than RS Thomas, but he wrote in English while RS Thomas was against the anglicisation of Wales. Some of RS's work is seen as a challenge to Dylan. (blagging off Wikipedia)

Very good question, I was trying to do something like that, but with limited time at work it proved difficult. Given some time it will be interesting to see some more meditative pairings.
I will admit that mine are pretty lazy - the first pair are actually next to each other on the magnum website.
EDIT: One final point - I've always found that edits like that are far easier with a bunch of prints on a table or floor, rather than with images on a screen. Maybe that's a cop-out

I think digging into the archive on the Magnum website for this purpose is really difficult. Pictures are tiny and covered in watermarks. Captions are literal, so you are easily pushed into searching that way. Give it a try Blake :)

I think grasas's, nemanja's and tijo's two go beyond the literal pairing slightly and in a nice way. I particularily like the bill jay / cactus pairing.

UPDATE
David Hurn really likes the response, so the public involvement has been upped. Instead of 3 pairings, there will be 5 pairings selected for the exhibition, and EACH of the selected pairs will receive a signed book.

James D's method doesn't work for me, just to let people know. I can't seem to right click and copy an image location on the magnum website. Might be a limitation of work surfcontrol / browser or both??
Edit - Got it to work. Have to select properties on an image and use the url there for some reason
