Flickr Trip - July/ Scott Kelby's Second Annual World Wide Photo Walk-- July 18 (Port Royal)

view profile

Big Dave Deluxe is a group administrator Big Dave Deluxe  Pro User  says:

Date: Saturday, 18 July 2009 (non-negotiable as it is a part of a world wide photo walk)

Time: 4:30-6:30

Where are we shooting? Port Royal; however, we will begin @ the airport round about and stop along the way.

How do I sign up? The only way to register by visiting worldwidephotowalk.com/kingston-ki-jm/. it's absolutely free to post. Keep in mind, the maximum number of photographers for one group is 50. If more people want to sign up, then another walk can be organized. BTW, you have to be registered to be eligible for prizes. You also can check the page for updates on the route and the restaurant at the end of the destination. Speaking of......

Where are we going to meet and eat at the end of the walk? Meet @ Fort Charles at the end of your walk for a debrief, next steps, and group photo opportunity.

Can I bring a guest? By all means, feel free to bring someone along; however, only people who registered for the trip are eligible for prizes.

Tell me more about this prize thingy. Camaraderie is good and all, but how many of us love a lil' competition with a reward? That's right, a prize will be given for the person who has the "best" picture from the walk. The prize is a copy of Scott Kelby's new book, The Digital Photographer. The winner will be chosen by the walk leader (that's me and I do accept bribes). In addition, the walk winner will be eligible for a grand prize (rumored to be Photoshop CS4 and some other cool stuff).

The prizes are really sweet

Yes, that Buckhead shoot was a blast. I'm signed up for this year's Midtown walk. It would be sweet if the yardie flickeristas walked Falmouth. IMHO, the market would provide phenominal images (who knows? that's where the winning image could come from). The homes along Duke St. that were built around the turn of the century would make great B&W images. I hear that this year's prizes will include a few copies of Scott's LR2 manual. Of course, the big deal is that you will be part of a world wide community of really good photogs doing our thing in unison.

Here is one of my shots from last year that was nominated (but didn't win crap)

Well, we're approved. I'm working on publishing the page, but I want to get some type of consensus on where we should meet & shoot. So far, I think Emancipation Park might be a good starting point. Also, we have to establish a start & end time.

I know July 18 (or I should type 18 July) seems a way off, but it will be here before you know it. That said, my goal is to have the page published within a week. I'll work on an interim page just so everyone can start signing up. Don't worry about the location and times at this point. Once we get some feedback, we'll update the location.

To briefly recap the rules, the walk must have an originating point and a destination. The walk shouldn't take more the 2 hours, although we can pick the start & end time. Kelby suggests shooting in a trendy area with good restaurants. We should keep this and a few other things in mind when we decide where to shoot.

I'd like to shoot from late afternoon to early evening so we could catch a harbor sunset if we went to Port Royal/Downtown or capture some light streams if we were in New Kingston. I've only been Downtown once (nice museum, will go back again), and I saw a restaurant not too far from KFC. My first choice is New Kingston, followed by Port Royal where we could always eat @ Gloria's, then Downtown. Actually, even if we don't go Downtown, I'd love to shoot it on a Sunday, but that's for another thread if anyone is interested.

I would highly recommend downtown. St william Grant park, even on a Sunday will make a great destination. In fact all of Parade or whatever it is called these days would be ideal and since you would be out in your numbers, this would be a good opportunity to get shots it would be hard to get safely, on your own. There's Moby Dick near to the Gallery which serves good Curry and Jamaican food.

I'm torn, I want to do downtown since in our numbers we should be relatively safe and its an area most wouldnt try outside of this trip so its offers a rare opportunity.

Port Royal seems safer, and tamer, but done and can be done easily with a small group.

New Kingston doesnt grab me

I'll have to call the city centre police to get an advisory on downtown. Will let you know. My suggestion for downtown is as Gio suggested, groups of three or more. But that means not much in the way of individual freedom, may end up with some similar images.
My thought's on Port Royal is a free for all, I have no major concerns about safety in that area.

The main issue I have with the dump is I don't know if I could deal with the smell. The other issue is the spirit of Bonita Jamaica got into me, so I'm not crazy about displaying negative images of Jamaica, especially when there is a lot of beauty.

I agree with the strength in numbers approach. I don't mind Port Royal at all. I loved it my first time there and I definitely wouldn't mind shooting there again.

This suggestion from Donnette who goes downtown often:

...I think we could do the parade area of Down Town Kingston. Right around the circle and inside there are lots we could do that would include some people, buildings, busess, homeless and criminals. Apart from that we would have to plan with a don from one of the inner cities for a tour.

Port Royal is perfect . More of the club members would also feel better. For this area we could start from the cemetry up.

I'd rather go on a don sanctioned tour than go touring downtown. Which currently is'nt officially divided up into turfs the way it used to be. So I could'nt say who is the official don for what area.

I like to be relaxed when I'm shooting so If we have to vote, my vote is portroyal. At least we can get sea and land options.

Only thing with port royal is food. If is Glorias u plan to go, no way dem can accomodate 50 people and everybody get served b4 nights end. Would have to make a previous arrangement with them.

CharleneCollins.JamaicaImages is a group administrator CharleneCollins.JamaicaImages  Pro User  says:

If I still owned UC, I would've had the links with a don.

I'm really feeling Port Royal like this :

Meet up somewhere in KGN, carpool to Palisados B4 the designated time drive/walk/shoot along the strip until start time and then drive/walk/shoot our way from say the airport/ship into PR.

At the end go to Glorias and/or the restaurant by the sea and hang out and eat

Your right D, Glorias cant handle a regular Sat/Sun crowd much less our group, so arrangements WILL have to be made.

Might have to collect up some money, preorder and prepay so that we can all eat. I can do that closer to the time. Dont want anyone going hungry (like Sunday gone!)

Yes the service takes long, but usually the wait is worth it. Last time I went , we had to wait til the waiter went across the street to pick up the fish from the boat. Cant beat that kind of freshness

Q. Where do we go on this walk?
A. Your local walk leader chooses the starting place and the basic route you’ll be following. They also choose an ending place (usually a local restaurant, pub, cafe, etc.) where you can wind down after the shoot, look at your photos from the day, and make new photography friends. At least, that’s the plan.

THe sun is blazing hot at 1:30 - 3:30pm. Had enough blazing hot sun Sunday gone with that harsh lighting - merciless!!

Would'nt 4pm into evening be more attractive?

Main spots on that road seem to be airport, old ship (whats left) Lighthouse, place where they have the parties, Port Royal cemetery and into PR.

Should we meet somewhere to carpool? If so , Wayne can we meet by the Digi parking lot in New Kingston?

You know guys, I don't think we can make that walk and take photos in less than 2hours from airport to port royal. I ran part of it once with a few stops for air and it took me about 1hr and I didn't get all the way there. Don't know about you but when I am taking photos time flies like stew peas in a plate, if we make it in the 2 hours we may not get enough shots in port royal.

I like Don's earlier time table (except start time 4:30, end time 6:30) of heading straight to port royal and walking around there, by the time we clear Morgan's Harbour, circle the town, docks and hit Fort Charles we looking down 2hrs.

The drive looks short and spicy, but the walk is very long.

Merrick, the 2 hour period is suggested by Scott Kelby. I'm not a stickler to the minute, but we also want to allow time for fellowship and fun for whomever sticks around. I need to post the walk route ASAP so if anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. Otherwise, I say we can meet up @ the parking lot @ either Fort Charles or Morgan's Harbour @ 4:30.

Can you put start at 4:30pm at airport finish 6:30 pm at Glorias. We can drive to the main spots (Wreck, Lighthouse, place where they have parties) then park on outskirts of PR then foot it.

Will there be enough in PR for the whole 2 hours for 32 persons?

So I got back late from this really good Chinese place last nite and promptly fell asleep! LOL. But at any rate, I like starting @ the airport, but the question is parking. Should we all meet @ the airport and then carpool? Honestly, I think it would be easier to just meet @ Fort Charles and park. We can always carpool and drive to the the places alongside the airport. I figure we should park near the start and end point so it isn't a hassle for anyone who isn't staying afterward.
