About Olympia Strobists
09/09/09 - Welcome to the new Olympia Strobist Group!
"Strobist"; is a term that generally refers to the use of off camera, battery powered flash to augment a photograph. Most commonly it is used in glamor / fashion shoots but can be used on almost any kind of photography where you want to have more control over the lighting. It's like having the sun in your pocket.
There are literally thousands of groups like this all over the planet. I just moved here from Portland where PDX Strobist is very active with over 600 members and regular, well attended meetups. Olympia Washington needs a group too. I have never had a group impact my work more than the Strobists.
It is a whole different approach to photography. If you are interested in persuing this concept, join the group, drop me a note and there will be events planned for October. Stay tuned.... The meetups usually consist of getting together with 2-6 models and 10-15 photographers. Sometimes there are more or less. I like to keep the ratio of photographers to models at about 2-3 to 1. We will meetup in an interesting location where there are several creative scenes to work Photographers are divided up into groups and each group will have 30-60 min to work with a model. This way you will have a chance to work with several models and the models get a lot of variety to bolster their portfolios. We also get a chance to learn from each other. The creative synergies are amazing. It's also a great place to meet models and other photographers and setup your own shoots later if you feel so inclined. Personally, I have met some really great talent this way and formed some great new friendships.
