The group is for named individuals rather than anonymous group or regimental memorials. Photographs of lists of names such as on a village war memorial are quite acceptable provided all names are properly tagged.

No anonymous regimental or national memorials PLEASE!

About Old Soldiers (rest in peace)

Memorials to deceased INDIVIDUAL soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines [male or female] anywhere in the world. The group is for named individuals rather than anonymous group or regimental memorials. Photographs of lists of names such as on a village war memorial are quite acceptable provided all names are properly tagged.

Statues, tombstones, plaques to everyone from Admirals and Generals to ordinary seamen and common soldiers. The famous are OK but I would prefer to see the forgotten lower ranks. Lord Nelson on top of Nelson's column is acceptable but I would prefer Nelson's signalman if we can find him.

Photographs now accepted - see below.

Please tag the individual's name so that family tree researchers may find him/her. This policy has already been successful [see posts].

I have been asked why this group exists when there are already statue and memorial groups. I would like this group to reflect as many individuals as possible. Especially lower ranks and especially stray graves and tombs which have been forgotten or neglected. For that reason I chose to make the first posting the grave of an unknown sailor I found behind a church at Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset.

If you know of an obscure war grave in your churchyard or cemetery please add it to this group.

PHOTOGRAPHS:
1) The photo must be of a former ARMED serviceman or woman. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, etc.

This excludes civilian police, fire service, ambulance, paramedics and UK Coastguard. I believe US Coastguard have previously been an armed service so US Coastguard may be included.

2) The person MUST be deceased. No currently living former service people, sorry.

3) The photograph MUST be properly tagged with full names so that the person may be found during a tag search of the Flickr database.

Any photo found which does not conform to these rules will be removed - we have to be fair to those people who DO follow the simple rules.
