Zig-Zag Quilt-along -- Baste & Quilt!
|
Are you ready!? I hope you are excited! I don't think I've told you this before, but this was my first zig-zag too :) I have had lots of hst experience with other projects but hadn't gotten around to the zig-zag! I'm loving my finished top -
First you need to baste your quilt - just in case you weren't with us for the last round Dana walked us through basting over here- no need for me to repeat. :)
Here's a picture of mine on the kitchen floor. Last time around I used 505 basting spray - loved it! None on hand this time around so I was back to the standby pins.
Getting my machine ready -
I like to take a few moments before quilting to clean up my machine, change the needle and such. And now I will show you why -
See all that fuzz!? It builds up so fast!
All cleaned up :)
For this quilt I'm installing my walking foot. If you want to stipple your quilt - GO for it! The same link to Dana's blog above has instructions for stippling too. I'm going to give a few basics for the walking foot :)
Quilting -
I wound a couple of bobbins and I'm set to go. If you would like to follow the zig-zag here's my method -
I started near the middle of the quilt, if you start at the top you may have a bit of shifting as you go. Line up the foot on the seam, either the side or the middle of the foot like I have. When you get to a corner, sew to the middle of the vertical seam, put your needle down, and turn to get a nice point, all the way across.
Then go back to the beginning and repeat!
I'm going for a very textured quilting. You may outline on either side of the seams or repeat the zig-zag all the way down.
All that said, just because you have the walking foot on, doesn't mean your lines have to be straight! You can have wobbly, organic lines all through your zig-zags for a similar, less stressful effect :)
Also, the zig-zag is the dominant shape, however if you look at your quilt long enough you may find other shapes to outline. I was going to show you mine today, but thought I would give you a chance to think it over before I influence you :) I'm really excited to get more quilting time in right away - I hope you are too!
Do you have questions? comments? snide remarks!? Feel free to email or post here :)

Woo (and indeed a hearty) Hoo, Amy!! I basted mine last night in anticipation of this today and here you're keeping your quilting a secret! Joking. I already know what I'm doing (nice and simple quarter inch either side of the seam) so hopefully will get started later tonight. Yep, I'm sneaking on at work again!

Snide remarks.....US?;) I like what you are doing and can't wait to see the whole thing...like I said on the other thread....not sure what to do with my big cream squares....may just do the X in the middle since I'm keeping it simple...you know...the KISS method.....Keep It Simply Stupid!:) Learned that from my kids 5th grade teacher Mr. Davis....long may he reign!:)
Lynz...get back to work!;)
