About Old Colony RailroadHistory of the Old Colony Railroad (1844-1893), operated from Boston to Southeastern Massachusetts, including Plymouth, Fall River, Newport, Cape Cod, New Bedford, Taunton, Framingham, Fitchburg, Lowell, and the Boston and Providence line before being leased in 1893 to the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad for 99 years. Passenger service ended in 1959, but freight service later continued on parts of the line with Conrail and CSX. Passenger service has been restored on other parts of the line have been restored by Amtrak and MBTA. Some parts of the Old Colony network have been converted to rail trail. |
