Gallery Project -- Choose a Group Member to Profile

JeremyOK is a group administrator JeremyOK  Pro User  says:

Hey all. Not sure how many of you have played around with the Galleries feature in Flickr. A gallery is basically like a set or collection, except you can only include photos from other people. To start a new gallery, just click the "ADD TO GALLERY" button over a photo you want to include -- the first time you do it, you add the title and description for the gallery, which can be changed later.

Anyway, here's my idea for an open project, with no deadlines and no winners (or losers!). Simply choose a member of this group to feature in a gallery, and pick up to 18 photos from that person's stream. You could choose your favourites of theirs, or stick to a theme if they have lots of photos of one subject area (birds, flowers, etc). Then post the link to the gallery here in this thread so others can find it.

Do more than one if you like, but I think it would be pretty cool if we tried to cover as many members as possible. If you want to pair up with a member and each do a gallery for each other, that would be neat too.

One interesting starting point is the Big Huge Labs Favorite Finder, which lets you find all the photos you've "Faved" from one user.

Also, if someone does *not* want their own photos included in a gallery, you can set that here.

______________________________________________

I'll kick things off. stjoe really dove into night photography this winter, and it's been inspiring to see the images emerge. With his birthday coming up, I thought I'd create a gallery of my favourites of his night shots, to honour the birthday boy in a small way and show off some of the coolest stuff he captured over the last few months.

This is super cool, Melanie -- I haven't followed Kim's photos before, but your gallery tribute has shown me the error of my ways. Wonderful mix of shots, diverse and rich.

Thanks for taking on the challenge! Anyone else want to select a member of the group to feature?

This is a great idea Jeremy? Is the collage a Big Huge Lab creation or is there a way of copying the Gallery collage and pasting it in your comments to get it to show up in this discussion?
Thanks for introducing me to Kim's eclectic collection of shots.

I had a great time diving through the archives of b.c. photoworks. Mandy has an extraordinary photostream of BC's mountains, lakes, wildlife, abandoned buildings AND two flower shots.

You will quickly observe her ability to photograph the ethereal magic of mist and light.

Thank you Lori and Jeremy ....she blushes.

For me this was a wonderful idea. It gave me a chance to look through Steve's pictures once again. While I admire the photography skills of a great many people in this group, Steve was my inspiration and mentor for Okanagan landscape photography.

He once said, "it's all about the light". I always think of that now, before I press the shutter.

Mandy, what a super cool idea to do a tribute to storm light -- you did a great job collecting them, too. I recognized some favourites of mine and got to see some ones I hadn't noticed before. I guess it'll be two years this summer since he passed away.

Once in a while someone leaves a comment on one of his pics and it'll pop up in my "Recent Activity"...after a moment of sadness, I usually click in and check out some of his shots. Kinda cool that his excellent photos live on.

The gallery you did for Lori is fantastic too. Whimsical indeed -- great humour and warmth in those selections. What fun!

Wow, I'm admiring the thoughtful, analytical introduction to your life undefined gallery, yukonchase -- quality writing, and the selection of photos is excellent too. I'm also fascinated by how we tend to portray and idealize landscapes, and agree that Rick has really carved out his own style and perspective by bucking that trend. Very, very cool -- well done, and thanks for participating.

You did it, Carol! Looks great -- a fitting tribute to our local Bird Whisperer. I like the humour and sense of wonder in your comments for each photo as well. Very nice!

I did another one too, having resisted the urge to blow dozens of hours on multiple galleries before anyone else had done some too. I picked Greg, and narrowed down the theme -- he's got enough great photos that it would be easy to do another bunch of galleries with no duplication. Anyway, here it is: The Trees of GGASP.

Cool, Darrel -- looks like Drew's the first to get two galleries, and it's fascinating to compare them. Different curators, different selections, totally different vibes. His stuff is perhaps most interesting to recontextualize like this. I'm loving these abstract ones -- there's some real beauty on display, from places you wouldn't expect to find it.

Yes, well said. That is my hope too.

I must say again, this little project has been really engaging and rewarding. I've been adding the new galleries to the list at the top.

Thanks to everyone who has invested some time into this -- the results are exciting. I've been particularly interested in the commentary, finding out why people selected certain photos and putting them in context. I'm looking forward to seeing (and reading) the next batch...keep 'em comin'.

My apologies for all the editing I've been doing on these comments -- it's mostly just to get pictures into the comments that contain a gallery link so they don't get lost in the shuffle. From yukonchase's, I saw that you could just paste in the link to the gallery and put square brackets around it for the gallery icon to show up in the comment -- slick!

Funny, I was working on another one last night and finally got around to posting it today. As a more open-ended long-term project, I think we can expect lulls in the action -- it takes a significant investment of time to do it well (as you know jamica1), and not everyone is into this kind of thing...so it may fade away once the most keen types have already done one, which is fine.

And please don't think anyone needs to do a gallery of my stuff just because I fill this group with my blathering. I chose to look at shyrz's awesome stuff for my latest curating attempt: shyrz landscapes.

Super cool jamica1 -- I love the choice of the path motif as an organizing principle. I threw together a gallery of 18 for an In Focus feature on Kim Thomas that will appear soon in Awesome Okanagan. Narrowing these down to eight for the article was tough -- she's got tons of incredible portraits. We don't see much of her stuff in our little landscape group, but she's occasionally posted as an honorary member. Mel had also done one of the earlier galleries featuring Kim, but it appears to have lost some shots over time.
