DELIBERATE BLUR ABSTRACT is the topic for Friday 24th February 2012

I was thinking not just shallow depth of field, but an abstract version of a composition that would work better if the shot is blurred.
A couple of examples...the first is from a work colleague
www.cadeturner.com.au/LANDSCAPES/Silverscape,-2009
not just his landscapes and not all his shots
and one of my contacts
www.flickr.com/photos/jacqui-m/6380780535/in/photostream
Hope you enjoy and are challenged!

Must admit these type of shots really aren't to my taste, they just looks like pictures my kids used to take before they could hold a camera properly.

I agree with Rob...I hate blurs...I need everything in focus, always. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to focusing. Although everyones entries are amazing but all I have in my head is something a toddler would take...

What's going on here, I have a very expensive lens with auto-focus and have just bought a new tripod. Will I have to throw them all away?

A quick and simple guide to taking this type of shots:

1) Give your camera to a 3 year old and tell them to go take some pictures

If you don't have a handy child to do this for you:

1) Get some nice thick vaseline, smear it all over the front element of your lens.
2) Take pictures

If your don't have a handy child OR vaseline AND don't want to ruin a lens:

1) turn off AF and set your focus to it's closest distance
2) Switch to shutter priority and set a shutter speed about 2 stops over where a properly exposed image would be(hopefully this will be slower than 1/10)
3) Drink a 1 litre bottle of the strongest alcohol you can find
4) go take pictures
5) if the results of 4 are in focus drink another bottle
6) repeat 4 and 5 until you either fall over and cannot stand up or you achieve the desired result.

*NOTE*
Obviously all of the above is a joke. I accept no responsibility for broken cameras if you carry out any of the above actions.

My father-in-law took the most beautiful impressionist type picture of my mother-in-law walking down a garden path overhung with greenery like this. It is one of my all time favorite pics (and I can't seem to get him to give me a copy of it -grrr!). I also think the trick is to use lots of color like some of you have done. Will have to noodle on this one for a bit.

Blur doesn't have to be out of focus!

You can try motion blur...
* Running water maybe.
* Follow a moving subject, so the background blurs.

I do see abstract photos that I like, as some of you have shown above. I think I need a lot more practice for this one. Although I do delete many shots that are accidentally blurred and appear abstract.
