Useful social networking sites for garden and landscape designers

Check out www.landscapejuice.com and www.garden-network.co.uk

Both sites are rapidly gaining traction and attracting interest from the landscape and garden design communities and bodies. Both sites are also probably worth joining for slightly different reasons.

Landscape juice is owned by Philip Voice, who is reasonably anti-establishment, but passionate about building a network of landscape and garden designers. Over the past two years he has developed a good network with a friendly, informal user base. People are exchanging leads and advice on a day to day basis. Philip is also very keen for content so it's a great place to air your views, or showcase your designs. Here is an article I wrote for them in June about how technology goes hand in hand with garden design. This resulted in more than a handful of useful opportunities and contacts.

The Garden Network is owned by Linnette Applegate (garden designer in association with Homebase). It's the larger of the two sites, and although newer, it already has good backing from professional bodies (The Horticultural Trades Association incorporating the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) are all contributors).

The Garden Network is also great for showcasing designs, photos, building your profile, and is increasingly trawled by the trade and consumer media looking for profiling and speaker opportunities from garden designers.

This is my interpretation so far of both sites - I'd say it's a no brainer to trial them and see what you think. Feedback welcome.

I've also set up a group on www.landscapejuice.com to encourage communications with other site members and for OCGD students past and present to keep in touch. Feel free to join here: www.landscapejuice.com/2008/07/looking-for-oxf.html#more
