Hi Gareth, great idea.
Q: How many entries per student?
Thanks,
Yiann.

Hi Gareth. Sounds like fun. As you've said, we've done a lot of talking about photography recently - good to do something more practical for a change.

...and I also think it's great that students of other OCA disciplines can take part. The only people possibly excluded are I think the musicians - but maybe someone will prove me wrong on that!

Yes, I'm pretty sure it'd be easy to make an intrument from some toilet rolls - Gareth did say a photogrpah of an 'installation' could be used...

Love the idea of music playing. My brother won't like this getting out but he used to do his homework sitting on the loo.

MMnnn .... am planning a photo involving two naked models (not in a loo!) but not sure I shall be able to find them since a professional model rate would be too much! I like Aktobeau's image but surely the shadow around the head and left shoulder needs cloning out!? Amano

My two entries have 'disappeared' from the 'rollwithit' search - but I've not done anything with the photos or the tags. The only thing that's changed has been that people have commented them.
Has anyone else 'lost' their entry?
(Thanks for pointing this out, Dewald)

Yes. I put one up yesterday as well which doesn't seem to have appeared at all. However, I found it when I clicked onto 'slideshow'. I actually thought you'd withdrawn your two Stuart when I didn't see them, but one of them is also on the slideshow.
There are still only a few entries even on the slideshow and all seem to be from photography students which would be a shame. Maybe it's because it's on the Flickr site and not everyone uses it (even the photography students). Perhaps the OCA site itself, or even the new magazine, would be a better site so that it would draw in the other disciplines.

Thabnks, Catherine. I've emailed Gareth to let him know the search possibly isn't working as well as it should.
Edit: Ah, both of my entries are in the slideshow... strange..

Hi Stuart, got your mail, thanks.. will reply a bit later. Strange they show up in the slideshow, but not in the tag search... could it be that tag search excludes video?
Yes, Catherine, I too hoped to have seen some work from other parts of the OCA, but there is still the weekend left... :-)

I suppose they may not know about it, or perhaps its a time issue. I'm a printmaking student but I don't have enough space to do any more printmaking at the moment - all available work surfaces have things drying on them, etc. Also there is a time investment involved with making a new print that I just don't have at the moment.
I've done photographs so I can join in. I do use photography in my printmaking but I can't help feeling rather silly when everyone here is bound to have more photography skills than I do:)

Tagged 'rollwithit. Only seems to be showing on the slideshow, which randomises the order.

Gareth's now aware of the problem and he'll ask the tutors to view the entries using the slideshow option. So we *should* be ok.

Stuart if you're in touch with Gareth, it might be worth mentioning that you only see all the entries on the slideshow if you're signed into flickr. If you're not signed in quite a few entries are missing, I think its the most recent ones.
I did have 2 photos on the entries to date page, now one has disappeared, although it's still on the slideshow.
Thanks Dewald!

The best way to find all the entries is not to use the link pasted above but to search this group's pool yourself. The search defaults to looking for groups and all text so change it to search on 'photos' and look for 'rollwithit' in 'tags' and the pictures all come up. Plus a few others...

Competition now closed and I can see that the photography tutors will have an interesting task picking a winner at their development day on Wednesday- some fabulous ideas and work.
I think we have discovered a glitch in the way flickr searches for tagged images, but I can assure you they will look at all entries using the algorithm identified by Eileen.

Rob, have just seen your question as to why I suggest the shadow is cloned out in the initial submission of someone looking down into a toilet.
Simply, to make the image look less like a photograph made with flash. There is also a shadow behind the toilet roll. I always consider that while flash is a great tool, it needs to be an invisible one.
How important is this? I do not know and guess that is up to the photographer and the judges. Its' something I would have done as well as using the Lens Profile feature in RAW to straighten lines.
When you have a good concept for an image, it seems sensible to execute it as best as possible though I do accept that the photographer might not have wanted to do this.
My comment was a suggestion not a command!

The reason I asked was that some photographers make a feature of the flash shadow, I just wondered why you thought it shouldn't be there. Just trying to spark debate...

You can use direct flash knowingly to invoke the paparazzi/snap shot genre.
In this case you could read it as a paparazzo shooting from the toilet.

LOL Clive.
A year or two ago I used to see a lot of high fashion images with flash shadows, sometimes playing with shape and proportion in a really interesting way. Doesn't seem to be in vogue so much now.
I wonder if they'll move on to the current paparazzi/ celeb snapper look? I see a lot of pictures of people in mags like Grazia with big heads and small lower bodies caused by using a wide lens up close and held high. I can never understand why they don't correct it. Not sure if Vogue and the like will be so keen to try that one (but I'm sure to be proved wrong now I've said it out loud).

I think there is a difference between breaking the rules knowingly and being amateurish.
To maintain that flash should not be noticeable is a bit autocratic and I can see that the shadows can be an aesthetic element of the photo; was not really disputing this but thanks for bringing it to my attention.
In one of my submitted images there was a lot of backlighting; I decided to withdraw it because it was not really the effect I wanted.

Eileen mentions the "big heads and small lower bodies " of fashion pics.
I guess this is another way of promoting the ideal slim chic and probably makes her breasts look bigger into the bargain !?
Heard a story recently. A top Israeli model was bitten by a snake she was caressing; the model soon recovered, the snake died of silicon poisoning !!?

Amano - I think the effect is just a by-product of trying to take full-body shots in a confined space like the side of an awards ceremony line-up.

And the winner is...

This entry attracted the most votes from today's meeting of photography tutors. Congratulations to poppytwo - if you email me (garethdent@oca-uk.com) with your real name, I can get the prize DVD in the post to you.
It was clear the tutors appreciated the humour and inventiveness in your image.
There were a number of close runners up including:

and this video
and the series from which this image is taken.
Many thanks to all who participated. I have learned quite a lot from the exercise. In particular I now understand how flaky the flickr tagging system is - yielding different results depending on where you search for images, and how important it is to be precise in wording competition rules.
I did say the image had to feature 'a toilet roll' and there was a lengthy discussion about whether this was sufficiently precise and whether a toilet roll in pieces was still a toilet roll. It is these sort of theological debates which make interactions with tutors so engaging ;-)

'I also think it would be fun to have more light-hearted comps from time to time.'
I think this is an excellent idea Eileen. I am happy to commit the OCA to running four light-hearted competitions a year with prizes being a book or DVD which in some way is vaguely relevant to OCA study.
Perhaps someone would like to start a 'competition themes' thread so that the OCA can pick a theme from student suggestions.
