Before joining this group, please take some time to review the nz2 group rules.

Few people realise that New Zealand, land of the kiwi, is one of the most highly urbanised nations in the world. The image of stunning sceneries and natural environment is a marketing ploy so successful that we kiwis have fallen under our own spell. Yeah, we do have stunning landscape (even if Peter Jackson did digitally enhance it for the Lord of the Rings trilogy) - so what if our rivers are polluted by farm fertiliser run-off - as long as the myth that the average New Zealander is a bush-whacking adventurer still persists - even if we now drive there in our shiny clean SUV's, tramp about for 5 minutes in our big boots, take a couple of snaps for the album, and then drive back to the city again...

OK, I'm exaggerating to make my point, but ever since the colonial invasion, cities have been the habitat of most New Zealanders - over 80% of us live in towns and cities, and the proportion is always rising. We are less in touch with 100% pure New Zealand now more than we ever have been in the past.

So, why do we continue to present ourselves as nature lovers and environmentally responsible, when the facts prove the opposite? It is because we have so much invested in the primary myths of the untouched nature of New Zealand that almost every NZ group here on Flickr is full of images of landscapes, fern fronds, and the like (don't get me wrong, most of these images are superb), but what about some evidence of the human inhabitation that we see everyday, rather than views from our annual holiday to National Parks. My contention is that there exists just as much beauty in contemporary New Zealand culture, and how we live in the environment that we live in.

So, (finally), post images that show everyday human life as it is lived here in New Zealand, or other aspects of our lived-in environment.

(images of natural bush/scenery/landscapes/mountains/etc will be deleted - even if they are fantastic - sorry).
