I reeeeelly, reeeeelly hope you can make that helium shark, birdwOrks. that's loads better than oceanic munchies---though I just added salted seaweed chips to the shopping list. so glad you can make it CG! ksam: the gates open at 6pm. Moufle-loofa, I'll be there before 6 most likely. Although they officially announce a time that people can start picnicing and claiming space, I think a lot of people are already positioned way before. My thinking is I'll go about 4 with my walkman and book. I'll spread out my faded american flag again so your non-flickr friend can spot me.

the stampede starts at 5. folk start lining up for the dash well before that (there was a photo of the sprint in yesterday's NYT, actually).

I think they notice the peeing on the trees. I've brought alcohol to the park before, cleverly mixed in a Gatorade bottle matching the appropriate color.

booze in open containers in public parks is illegal in NYC. but it's easy to disguise. your cocktail sounds unbelievably ideal for this event, birdwOrks. I'll contribute $$ and bring cups.

Evill1's Gatorade bottle idea is inspired - the colour of this stuff must match one of the more unnatural Gatorade flavours (either that or antifreeze...!)
A pre-mixed supply, a shaker, and a bag or two of ice shall be shoved into the cooler. Anyone got any plastic, great white motif martini glasses...?

OK this all sounds like its going to be to much fun, I'm going to have try and get my butt over there.
Its not a shark but it does fit the ocean theme. If there are any Linux fanatics with any large penguins (The Linux mascot) they might make a good addition. Unfortunately the only penguins I have are just two inches tall, so they aren't very visible.
Besides if we are going to have stuff to eat or drink for humans, maybe the sharks would like a snack also.

I have a laptop also, but not sure if I can make it ...
This movie traumatized me when I first went to see it. I spent my teen years near a lake, and every summer day my friends would come over and we'd spend the day swimming and sunbathing. I had a big inner tube that we liked to float around on, and the day after seeing Jaws, I was in the inner tube and felt the sharp nudging of the air nozzle as it poked into my thigh. I began screaming and paddling madly to get away from what I was certain was Mountain Beach Lake's version of Bruce the shark.

yes, OldhaMedia, hats! we also need a picnic. I'm bringing some stuff (bread, salmon, lemon, capers, brie, seaweed chips, Swedish fish, homemade shark cookies?) but would love it if others brought some stuff to share too. Birdw0rks is bringing many toys and briny blue cocktails. Aaron (EVill) is donating blankets to sit on and waves to surround us. VincenzoF is handling tech. oops, I forgot Ranjit--he's bringing sharky snacks too. but never can have too much booze & food, right?
as to finding each other, we need 2 or 3 people to volunteer their cell phone numbers, so we can find each other if it's totally mobbed. alas I'm a Luddite (no cell phone) so can't volunteer. maybe we should choose a general quadrant of the lawn to aim for too? other ideas? please invite your NYC Flickr friends! the more the merrier (but tell them it's potluck). The park supports 802.11b & g. But I should warn you that it often gets overloaded on movie night since so many people bring laptops. If I can make it, I'll probably bring my iBook also.

VincenzoF--fried chicken sounds excellent! It's hard to say how many we'll be just yet. I e-mailed a few other NYC Flickrs (LarimdaME, GammaBlaBlog) today who might not be checking the discussion board.
But, so far we have EVill1 (Aaron), birdw0rks (Simon), Ranjit, carpeithcus, hbomb, Catskills Grll (Gail), ksam (Kathleen), Shortcake, OldhaMedia, Joe (joeinqueens), Adriana (adrianadesigner), MacRonin, Ingrid (maybe can attend), my-friend-Amy-who's promised-to-come-early, you, me = 16. I just got a shark cookie-cutter (yay!) and some teensy paillettes (tiny candies) of things like teddy-bears and fish to be the sharks' stomach contents. (also got some expensive smoked salmon, which I'll freeze until 8/22.)
perhaps someone would be willing to make shark fins out of toast (guess whose good idea that is?) and bring some hummous or dips?
sharing phone numbers off-thread is a good thought.

I've (still) got paper plates from the last picnic which I'll bring. Maybe I'll make deviled eggs to look like biting sharks. Blood oranges? Lady Fingers? I can do the shark fin toast as well.
I think someone should issue a press release - we're definitely going to be the over the top group in attendance.
Bird0 - If your on-campus dealer doensn't work out, maybe we can tether Finbar to a long stick.
Oh and DaveNYC may be coming as well.

I sent an e-mail to Stewart only because we're going all out for this one. Normally I avoid sending him notes since he must get a ton of emails as it is - and I can only imagine what winds up in his inbox. Anyway - I'm hoping he can make his way to NYC and to one of our gatherings.

I have an external 7in1 card reader that hooks up via USB so that should work on any laptops we have. It says it does (CF/MicroDrive, MS/MS Pro, SM, SD/MMC) I've only tried the CF since thats what I have

I'm bringing some blankets and the waves. Perhaps I should write someone at HBO/Bryant Park and see if they's perhaps be into some special accomodations.
If I could get one or two more people to join me early, that would help since some other attendees get all in your face about the park real estate.
