About NYC Flea Markets & Green Markets - FleaSpeech

This group is for photos relating to flea markets and green markets in New York City.

*Photographs of street fairs are NOT permitted, and will be deleted.

(Street fairs = tube socks, vendors of fried food, etc., recently mass-manufactured items.
Flea markets = antiques, collectibles, vintage clothing, quality crafts, estate jewelry, mid-20th-cent. items, furniture (all eras), ephemera, etc.)

One obvious difference between an NYC street fair and an NYC flea market is that a fair isn't really a sustainable economy from a eco-/green perspective, since the inventory tends to consist of recently-manufactured items, and the numberous small generators running the food stands are noisy and polluting.

But antiques and collectibles are, by definition, items that are being re-purchased, re-used, possibly re-purposed, etc.

Also, street fairs cause damage to quality of life and business for most residents and businesses in the immediate area, while flea markets and green markets tend to be rooted in the neighborhood itself, a fixture, and in general enhance quality of life and help businesses in the immediate area.

***You should NEVER take a photograph of a flea or green market vendor or their inventory without asking their permission. To not ask permission first is just plain rude.***

A nice antique in the Met. Museum of Art is one that you paid to see (perhaps photograph), and it is in a context of display, not commerce. Conversely, a nice antique at a flea market is an item the dealer purchased and is now selling in order to make a living. The context is different. Respect it. Some vendors see photos of their merchandise as free advertising and love it. (For those who do, why not offer to link your photo of their item(s) to the dealer's or market's website, if there is one?) Other vendors see photography of their items as an intrusion. You're taking an image of something that they, as a private individual, own. They don't know you or what purpose you're putting your photographs toward. Think about it.*
